Black and Latino filmmakers collaborate to produce a film ("Sunday Evening Haircut") for all audiences!
“Sunday Evening Haircut” starring Reginald VelJohnson and Kiki Shepard hits the film festival circuit!
"Sunday Evening Haircut" is a short based on a series of short stories called "Division Street" written by Reginald VelJohnson and brought to you by award winning Filmmaker and NALIP Member Henry K. Priest. The film had its’ World Premiere on Friday, February 18th, 2004 during the Pan African Film Festival.
Synopsis:
A man competes with God for his wife’s time and attention every Sunday evening… Althea and O.C. love each other but have become emotionally separated by Althea's strong devotion to God. O.C. asks the question "Is your love for God more important than for your love for your man?" He doesn't understand why her commitment is so rigid. She doesn't understand why he questions her commitment. (2004/US/short/17 minutes)
A great example of diversity in filmmaking, the film "Sunday Evening Haircut" is one project that celebrates diversity in film-making. The writer and star of the film is a Black actor, Reginald VelJohnson (Die Hard, Family Matters). The co-star is a Black actress, KiKi Shepard (Showtime at the Apollo). They are the only persons in front of the camera, which may lead viewers to believe that the film is made for the Urban market, this is not the case. The director is a first time Black director, Sean LeSure. The cinema-tographer is Caucasian, Mark Woods (Emmy Award winner). The producer is Latino, Henry K. Priest. The production company is Boricua Films, a Latino production company spearheaded by the Boricua Brothers, David and Erik Llauger-Meiselman. The Art Director is Latino, Felipe Alejandro (Vice President of Nosotros). The rest of the production staff are Latinos and members of Latino organizations such as NALIP & Nosotros.
“As the producer of the project I made a special attempt to crew up with a diverse cast and crew because I want to show the industry that Black and Latino filmmakers can work together and produce projects that don't only speak to Urban audiences. This one particular project is about Love, a universal topic that can reach mainstream, Urban and all other audiences. I am one producer who has been listening to all the panels on diversity issues. I have taken strides to improve the image of Latinos and other minorities by creating more projects and opportunities for them in film. With the help of organizations like Nosotros and NALIP we have resources to assist us in our journey.” said the producer Henry K. Priest. Henry received an award during the 2004 NALIP Conference V--Video Slam for the film "UnderDOG". He is also the director of the Nosotros American Latino Film Festival.
Catch the next screening of “Sunday Evening Haircut” during this year's NALIP Conference VI--Catch The Latino Wave! (Make sure to look out for him as he will be this year's Video Slam & NALIP'sters 'On View' Coordinator!)
