"What's AMOR got to do with it?"
FEBRUARY 9, 2005
NALIP-New York is proud to present a pre- Valentines Day screening of films by Latino filmmakers that cover the gamut of human emotions from true everlasting love to love that is conditionally warped, and from the love of an art form to the love of competition that is sport. Individually, each film captures an expression of passion unique to the characters they portray. Collectively, they open a window into that hardest of places to define or fully comprehend -- the human heart. What's AMOR got to do with it? That all depends on the cards you've been dealt.
Featuring --
"LOVE AND LAUNDRY" by Barbara Alvarez
"RACKET" by Michael Baez
"BEAUTY" by Pepper Negron

Puerto Rico filmmakers and filmgoers gathered at the Ateneo Puertorriqueño in Old San Juan the evening of Wednesday, January 26, for NALIP-Puerto Rico's second local film slam.
The ten short films screened, some of which were professionally produced while others were impressive student efforts, included "Juan on Juan" (Julián Márquez: 3 min.), "1/2 Pocillo" (Inés Mongil: 3 min.), "Derek" (Ricardo Villa: 5 min.), "La Chica de las Estrellas" (Manolo Ramos: 4 min.), "La Misión" (Alex Santiago: 7 min.), "Growing Pains" (Mario Díaz: 11 min.), "Comadreja" (Yamil Fuentes: 12 min.), "In One Reality" (Joel Pérez: 12 min.), "El Loco Dorado" (Ariel Annexy: 15 min.), "Todo Fue Tan Real" (Víctor Javier Ramos: 19 min.), and "El Ataque" (Juan Esteban Suárez: 31 min.).
Following each screening, an enthusiastic audience of more than fifty attendees discussed the work and gave each filmmaker feedback, then voted anonymously for their favorites, selecting as the top three of the night Alex Santiago's "La Misión," Mario Díaz's "Growing Pains," and Juan Esteban Suárez's "El Ataque," all of which received cash awards.
The event was organized by NALIP-Puerto Rico's Frances Lausell and James Stevens-Arce, who announced that Film Slam 3 is scheduled for September 21 and that NALIP-Puerto Rico and the Ateneo Puertorriqueño will join forces with the Asociación Puertorriqueña de Guionistas y Dramaturgos (APGD) on July 14 to sponsor Puerto Rico's first scene slam, in which professional actors will offer live readings of selected scenes from screenplays-in-progress.

NALIP--Puerto Rico NEWS!!!
María Falcón, producer from NALIP--Puerto Rico was awarded as finalist for her production GeoAmbiente, a nature and environmental weekly TV show in Puerto Rico, with the Filmmakers for Conservation Award (FFC) during the Wildscreen International Wildlife Film Festival in Bristol, UK. The FFC Award, is sponsored EcoWatch and National Geographic Channel The award, recognizes filmmakers who have made significant contributions toward the protection of wildlife and the environment. Also, an additional recognition was granted to Falcón during the Green Oscars when she was awarded Finalist for the TVE Award for GeoAmbiente’s Jobos Bay Reserve: between the devil and the deep blue sea, Parts I & II. With this episode GeoAmbiente was able to present Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve’s unique ecosystem with it’s natural values and threats. As result, land acquisition by our authorities and a management plan agreement was obtained. The TVE Award takes two important factors in consideration: 1) production excellence, and 2) the television program must be developed in a country with little or no tradition of environmental programming.
Wildscreen is the world’s largest and most prestigious international wildlife film festival. Every two years Wildscreen attracts nearly 400 entries from approximately 40 different countries; this, being the first time that Puerto Rico and the Caribben Islands had representation.

"Don Juan Tenorio" Brought To You By The Hispanic Society of the Arts
A group of Latin actors, directors and producers living in Los Angeles California, has decided to make the classic and contemporary literary plays of the most celebrated Hispanic writers, available to the Latin community. The group is The Hispanic Society of the Arts, a non-profit organization, dedicated to promote the richness of the Spanish language with brilliant theater plays.
Don Juan Tenorio, recognized as one of the most successful theater plays in Latin America, has been chosen to open this promising theater season. In order to attract the theater fan, as well as the adolescent who is barely starting to know his roots, the theater play, originally written by Jose Zorrilla in 1844, has been adapted by the writer and comedian Mario Ramirez. The comedian explained that the comic adaptation he made is to trigger the interest of people who have never witness this kind of theater before, and make them become interested in it, while they discover its value in a very entertaining way. In order to do this, the writer has added to the original text, phrases that will sound very familiar to the audience. For example, instead of talking about "hills filled with flowers" like the original Tenorio, we speak about hills filled with immigration officers. In this way, we update a century old play without losing the magic of its original form. Our goal is to appeal not only to Hispanics born in any country of Latin America, but also to attract the one that is born in the United Stated and is ready to feel proud of being a Latino.
Several Hispanic actors have come together to make this ambitious project a reality, among them is Mario Ramirez, Jackie Torres, Maria Isabel Aguilera, Roberto Zapien, Tony Farias, Eddie Hidalgo, and Lucio Arroyo. The play will be presented in Spanish on Saint Valentine's day, Monday February 14 at 7:00 pm at the Theater of Holy Rosary Church, at 7800 Vineland Avenue, Sun Valley, CA 91352.
Those who come will enjoy dinner and a show for the donation of $20 per person and $35 per couple. The money raised will help the Hispanic community of the Holy Rosary Church and the arts.

‘Diablita’ Film Project Website NOW Up! Hello all,
Just want to let you know that the ‘Diablita’ film project website has just been published. It is a work in progress, but it's a start. Diablita, as 35mm short film, is an action/comedy about how a screenwriter's concept gets twisted during a surreal development meeting, where two fast-talking studio executives proceed to turn his script concept into a T&A laden, gun fest driven, and car chase between two hot & sexy females, in order to conform to their commercial marketing strategy. You'll find basic information at the website as well as still photos from a pre-production test shoot that was done last Sunday, where we blew up some scale model cars against green screen.
If you like, visit the site at http://www.volarefilms.com/Projects/Diablita/index.htm Hope you enjoy the still photos. Warmest Regards,
Marco Santiago

In the world of entertainment, the word Latina often brings to mind actresses such as Jennifer López, Salma Hayek and Cameron Díaz. However, Latinas are now experiencing a pivotal shift from existing primarily in front of the camera as actresses to taking the reins behind the camera as writers, producers and directors. Perhaps one of the best-known examples of this shift is Salma Hayek’s uphill struggle and hard-won success in bringing the life of Frida Kahlo to the big screen. However, there are also numerous unsung heroes who, with steely determination and an undaunted spirit, forge ahead with their own filmmaking dreams.
These emerging Latina filmmakers can now control how the nuances, subtleties and complexities of the Latino culture are parlayed to a worldwide audience. This important transference of power can also help shape, in great degree, the ways in which our culture is understood by the mainstream American audience.
