NALIP--Austin, Texas

The newest approved chapter of the National Association of Latino Independent producers (NALIP) hosted their first official event in Austin, Texas January 13.  Filmmakers, actors, talent agents, writers and film festival organizers were among the 64+ attendees at the NALIP-Austin Kick-Off Party, celebrating the chapter's formation and announcing its 2005 calendar of events.  The Kick-Off was held at Nuevo Leon Restaurant.

Distinguished guests included: NALIP national board member Evy Galan along with husband and Austin-based documentary filmmaker, Hector Galan.  Actress and filmmaker Viviane Vives, co-star in the critically acclaimed
Austin made film "Dear Pillow" was the evening's featured speaker.  "Dear Pillow" has earned a 2005 Independent Spirit Award nomination for Austin-based director, Bryan Poyser.  The ISP ceremony traditionally occurs the Saturday before Oscar night and televised on the Independent Film Channel and Bravo.

Latin Style Magazine writer Gabriel Castro, in
Austin doing research for his article on Latino film and music in Austin, was one of several press representatives.  His colleagues included staff from the Spanish language newspaper Rumbo, along with El Mundo, Arriba Art & Business News and Ahora Sm. (an publication of the Austin American-Statesman). Other notable guests included Carol Pirie, Assistant Director of the Texas Film Commission, Eugenio del Bosque, festival director of Cine las Americas, Matt Dentler, festival director of SXSW and Jesus Cantz Medel, festival director of the Cine Cuauhtemoc Pan American Film Festival to be held in Acapulco, Mexico.

"The strong turnout for the launch indicates a hunger and a need for NALIP's presence in
Austin," said Rupert Reyes, Interim Chair of NALIP-Austin.  "This was a great way to start our first year.  All the time and energy that the interim board put into the chapter so far has left a mark in the media community."

Austin-based NALIP Board member Evy Galan, agrees, "Congratulations to NALIP Austin on a very successful chapter launch.  Latino producers living in the
Austin area will benefit greatly from this new NALIP Chapter.  And, Austin's burgeoning film industry will benefit from having this chapter as a resource and link to the national organization."

Other events on NALIP-Austin's 2005 calendar include a showcase of short films, Chonitos  Show us your Shorts! (February), organizing panels for SXSW (March) and Cine Las Americas (April), a screen-writing workshop with Luke Garza (May), and other events to be announced as details are finalized.

BORICUA POP: Puerto Ricans and the Latinization of American Culture

Named 2004 Choice Outstanding Academic Title

(New York) Writer, filmmaker and Columbia University professor Frances

Negrón-Muntaner's book, Boricua Pop: Puerto Ricans and the Latinization of American

Culture has been included in the prestigious Choice Outstanding Academic Title list.

Every year in the January issue, the American Libary Association's publication Choice publishes a list of Outstanding Academic Titles that in the words of the organization, "reflect the best in scholarly titles reviewed by Choice and brings with it the extra-ordinary recognition of the academic library community."

Accordingly, the list is highly selective: It contains approx-imately ten percent of some 6,600 works reviewed in Choice each year, and less than 3 percent of the 23,000 titles submitted to Choice during the same period. In this regard, Outstanding Academic Titles prides itself in naming the "best of the best."

Boricua Pop: Puerto Ricans and the Latinization of American Culture was selected in part for being the first book solely devoted to Puerto Rican

visibility, cultural impact, and identity formation in the U.S. and at home. Frances Negrón-Muntaner explores everything from the beloved American musical West Side

Story to the phenomenon of singer/actress/fashion designer Jennifer Lopez, from the faux historical chronicle Seva to the creation of Puerto Rican Barbie, from novelist Rosario Ferré to Warhol Superstar Holly Woodlawn, and from Haitian-Rican painter Jean-Michel Basquiat to the seemingly overnight success story of Ricky Martin. Negrón-Muntaner traces some of the many possible itineraries of exchange between American and Puerto Rican cultures, including the commodification of Puerto Rican cultural practices such as voguing, graffiti, and the Latinization of pop music.

Drawing from literature, film, painting, and popular culture, and including

both the normative and the odd, the canonized authors and the misfits, the

island and its diaspora, Boricua Pop is a fascinating blend of low life and high culture: a highly original, challenging, and lucid new work.

Frances Negrón-Muntaner is aalso e co-editor of Puerto Rican Jam, editor of

None of the above: Contemporary Puerto Rican Culture and Politics, and author

of Anatomy of a Smile.

ENRIQUE MURCIANO: SERIOUS MOVEMENT

Enrique Murciano looks so serious, competent and convincing as FBI agent Danny Taylor on CBS' Without a Trace that it's hard to see him as anything else.  It's not surprising: he was a virtual unknown before he the program premiered in 2002, and has appeared only in a few small, under-distributed independents since.  But that's about to change.

Actually, Murciano did appear in a couple of major films, but very small parts: he was in Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and Jerry Bruckheimer's Blackhawk Down.  Still, though he was only on screen for a brief moment, the Blackhawk shoot was a career-changer.  He shared a few pivotal scenes with Don Cheadle and Luis Guzman, and attracted the attention of Jerry Bruckheimer in the process.and Bruckheimer was the one who brought him in to his TV project, Without a Trace.
