AIVF
WORD LAB: Call for Screenplay Submissions
Deadline for submissions: February 28, 2005
The Association of Independent Video & Filmmakers (AIVF) seeks
submissions for Word Lab, a new monthly, unstaged readings series
of original, feature-length screenplays performed by a cast of professional
actors. The series will present talented writers, actors and directors
working together to showcase new screenplays for a New York audience.
This signature program is set to launch in New York and seeks submissions
of feature-length independent screenplays from across the country.
The Word Lab selection committee selects screenplays based
on merit and compatibility with an unstaged reading format.
Alexandra Berger, former Artistic Director of The Fifth Night Screenplay
Reading Series, is the Creative Director of Word Lab. Casting directors
will select talent for the readings. Word Lab performances are to
be held at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, 236 East Third Street, NYC.
SCREENPLAY SUBMISSIONS:
To qualify for Word Lab, please submit an original, feature-length
screenplay (80-140 pages) and the other required materials outlined
in the submissions application. Word Lab is open to all screenplays
regardless of genre, content or subject matter; however, film scripts
of certain
genres--such as action-adventure or science fiction--tend to be
unsuitable for the reading series because they often rely more heavily
on descriptive narrative (action and imagery) than dialogue.
Word Lab reserves the right to request cuts in length and/or rewrites
of scripts without guaranteeing a reading. Works in progress, script
summaries, plays, short stories, short film scripts, teleplays of
less than 80 pages, synopses, treatments, samples and unsolicited
rewrites of previously rejected scripts will not be considered.
Applicants will be notified on a rolling basis.
Once a script has been selected, the writer will be notified
and a performance date will be set. If requested, Word Lab will
provide support in finding a director for the reading. We will also provide a casting
director and a complete, professional cast. We will schedule and hold one
rehearsal at the Cafe, generally from 2-5pm on the day of the reading.
All participants in Word Lab including writers, actors, casting
directors and directors donate their time.

Colombian actress Catalina
Sandino Moreno was nominated today for a Best Actress Academy AwardT for her role in
'Maria Full of Grace'. Reportedly ecstatic with her
nomination, Moreno said she called her mother
in Bogota from her California home when she heard the
news of her nomination. "We screamed, we cried, everything.
It was a really big surprise," she said, El Tiempo newspaper
reported in its online edition Tuesday.
Maria Full of Grace is the story of a 17-pregnant Colombian girl
who leaves her rural home to become a drug mule -- someone who carries
drugs on flights -- and heads to New York City.
Also making news
for their OscarT nominated work in 'Motorcycle Diaries'
and 'The Sea Inside' are screenwriter Jose Rivera (Best
Adapted Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published) and
Alejandro Amenabar (Best Foreign Language Film of the Year,
SPAIN), respectively.

John Leguizamo's Learning Curve
by
Todd Gilchrist (www.filstew.com)
Actor Johyn Leguizamo
remains more enthusiastic than most actors half his age, intent
on sucking up everything he can when in close proximity to elite
filmmakers and actors.
John Leguizamo has worn
many creative hats over the course of his career, including those
of comedian, actor, producer, writer and director. But his greatest
contributions to the silver screen have often been in the form of
adding a little spice to a heady ensemble cast.
He does it once again
in 'Assault on Precinct 13', starring opposite Lawrence
Fishburne and Ethan Hawke as Beck, a motormouthed drug addict and
conspiracy theorist. But
when FilmStew sat down recently with the 40-year-old Colombian born
actor, he said it was actually to the credit of the film's director,
Jean-Francois Richet that he was able to stand out this time.
