More Big Retailers Expand Hispanic Marketing Strategies

Ikea, Home Depot, JCPenny Change to Court Lucrative Latino Market

NEW YORK January 3, 2005 (AdAge.com) -- In what appears to be a major expansion of their marketing programs as well as their attitudes, many big U.S. retailers are spending more to target Hispanics as they do research to identify and develop Hispanic-designated stores. Retailers ranging from home-improvement chain Home Depot and electronics giant Circuit City to department stores like JCPenney and discounters such as Target Stores are adding bilingual signage, collateral materials and staff and tweaking merchandise to appeal to a growing Latino community that accounts for 14% of the U.S. population but shops disproportionately in certain areas.

Part Chinque

Mis estimados Compinches,

Danny Rodriguez, producer of the film THE DEVIL INSIDE, and myself, the film's Associate Producer, that have been in this section sharing the joys and pains that we went through the production in order to share also the lessons learned, will like to thank, from the most deepest rincones of our corazoncitos, those people that have been sending e-mails and phone messages about how much you have enjoyed our chats. Your positive feedback is highly appreciated, and I also want to thank all those people that hate these chats for refraining to let us know.

For previous installments of these chats, please visit the NALIP website looking for the archives of the Newsletter. AlexMend:  tas ahi?

DannyRodriguez03:  shi

AlexMend:  FEEL LIKE LITI?

DannyRodriguez03:  well lets try to have a game plan where we want to go with it this time

DannyRodriguez03:  should we start with the actual first days of production

AlexMend:  let's review

AlexMend:  pre prod drop outs, pains and tribulations w/sag, what else?

DannyRodriguez03:  weather problems

DannyRodriguez03:  crew problems

AlexMend:  let's do an upbeat one

DannyRodriguez03:  cast member getting arrested

AlexMend:  so let's do one of travel and arrivals

AlexMend:  shit let's just do it

AlexMend:  first days

AlexMend:  yeap let's do it

DannyRodriguez03:  interns were a major positive

DannyRodriguez03: dale

AlexMend:  so that's a good start

AlexMend:  ok

DannyRodriguez03:  ok

AlexMend:  quiet on the set

AlexMend:  roll chat

AlexMend:  and action

DannyRodriguez03:  ok ok

AlexMend:  Happy New Year Danny and all the readers of these ramblings

DannyRodriguez03: Happy new years to you and all the readers also

DannyRodriguez03:  where did we leave off?

AlexMend:  well we talked about the pain that was to deal with SAG

DannyRodriguez03:  ohh, yeah...lets move beyond that...please

AlexMend:  so here we are one day or two before travel day

AlexMend:  you have sent already the art department down and they have already started working on the sets

DannyRodriguez03:  Panavision Truck from Mexico city has left already

AlexMend:  how many on your art dept crew?

DannyRodriguez03:  1 main girl with her 2 little helpers (interns from baja film school)

DannyRodriguez03:  they created magic

AlexMend:  OH THE INTERNS!!!

DannyRodriguez03:  with no budget

AlexMend:  Danny, please, an introduction to THE INTERNS!

DannyRodriguez03:  WOW!! This was one of the best things to come out this production.. Our friend Carlos, who works at Fotokem had told me of this film school in baja where he had taught cinematography

DannyRodriguez03:  and he asked me if I would need any interns.....

AlexMend:  being a micro budget production I assume you said YES!

DannyRodriguez03:  no i said Hell Yes

DannyRodriguez03:  we went to TJ 2 weeks before production

AlexMend:  AND DID YOU LUCK OUT!

DannyRodriguez03:  and walked into a room where there was about 30 people

DannyRodriguez03: out of that we picked 10

AlexMend:  what was what you were looking for on them?

DannyRodriguez03:  this 10 kids, ended up being the hardest working, most creative group of young people I have ever been around

DannyRodriguez03: i was looking for the passion to learn

DannyRodriguez03:  and thats all we got

DannyRodriguez03:  the next week we assigned interns to each dept.

DannyRodriguez03:  the interns in Props(Fernando and Gabriel) started to find or create every prop possible

DannyRodriguez03:  from creating molds to create machine guns from scratch, from making the dog fetus to making a flame thrower from scratch

DannyRodriguez03:  they found all the cars, extras

AlexMend:  I have to say that when I arrived at the location and found a bunch of young people as the greater part of the crew and that all of them were students i have my misgivings

AlexMend:  brb

DannyRodriguez03:  well the heads of departments all had their doubts, especially the gaffer and key grip

DannyRodriguez03:  who were furious when they saw that their team was mainly interns with no experience..(later our main gaffer would come up to me and say that these were the hardest working kids he has ever been around) and that they were eager to learn......same goes for every dept.

DannyRodriguez03:  and FYI, talking to Fernando one of interns and telling him how disappointed i was on how my website for the film was going (www.lacedonline.com/devilinside) I told him how i wanted an actual story around the website with new articles...so he will be creating one from scratch...we will see  who comes out with the better web site...this professional company or this eager, creative intern from Baja....

AlexMend:  back

AlexMend:  sorry needed to step out a sec

AlexMend:  so you were saying...

DannyRodriguez03:  nicotine fix?

AlexMend:  nope, needed to meet my daughter that was walking alone from school

DannyRodriguez03:  wow that was fast, not bad for an old man

AlexMend:  old your...

AlexMend:  viejos los cerros y asi reverdesen

DannyRodriguez03:  what ever that means...even your sayings are old school

DannyRodriguez03:  can we get back to it

AlexMend:  well after my first surprise about the average age of the crew I decided just to give them a chance to prove themselves

AlexMend:  and do they did that

AlexMend:  not a single complaint from them

DannyRodriguez03:  ;-)

AlexMend:  even when the conditions of lodging and the location were far from optimal

AlexMend:  long working hours

AlexMend:  very defective craft and catering services (and yes we will come back to this issue later)

DannyRodriguez03:  =-O

AlexMend:  but what a bunch of dedicated kids

AlexMend:  and not only that, but also incredibly personable and polite

AlexMend:  all mexicans, isn't?

DannyRodriguez03:  si señor

AlexMend:  what were thier ages?

DannyRodriguez03:  18-25

AlexMend:  boy, there is one explanation to their stamina

DannyRodriguez03:  alex, i think we should get back to the first days

AlexMend:  ok, i'm sure that from now on they will get many honorific mentions as we go along

DannyRodriguez03:  as you know we were beginning to shoot on a monday...

DannyRodriguez03:  the truck from mexico had left on a wed.

AlexMend:  yes and I was supposed to arrive on Saturday morning

DannyRodriguez03: so it was supposed to get there on Sat. for the camera crew to prep camera

DannyRodriguez03:  but as you know the weather was very bad during those days

DannyRodriguez03:  well its sunday morning and im in LA, getting things ready to head out

DannyRodriguez03: and the calls start coming in from the resort

DannyRodriguez03: no camera truck.....no host....no food.....rooms are not ready.....non stop rain

AlexMend:  no host? who in a hell was supposed to be your location mgr? WHAT AN ASS!!! where was he?

DannyRodriguez03:  well my host was my location manager

DannyRodriguez03:  he was also our cook

DannyRodriguez03: you might know him, his name is ALEX MENDOZA

AlexMend:  oh that SOB!!! How come you gave someone like him ALL THAT RESPONSABILITY?

DannyRodriguez03:  for some reason he convinced me that he can handle that and more

DannyRodriguez03:  for what he was charging he better

DannyRodriguez03:  =-O

AlexMend:  To our readers: remember lessons previously learned?

AlexMend:  do not assume that you can take over responsibilities just because you believe that you can?

AlexMend:  well that was a hard learned lesson of your seguro servilleta

AlexMend:  the location manager thing was by default since I was responsible towards the owners of the location

AlexMend:  the catering chef cooking thing was just a plain F.... UP!!!

DannyRodriguez03:  dont remind me, we will get there

DannyRodriguez03:  well, once Alex got there on Sunday, things got a bit better, he went and bought tamales and Truck and I get there at 10pm

AlexMend:  with CARLA!

DannyRodriguez03:  ohhh yeah, I picked up one of the actress, actually 2 of them on the way

DannyRodriguez03:  so they wont get lost

DannyRodriguez03:  and carla from the airport

DannyRodriguez03:  we regroup that night.........we have two shooting schedules, one if it rains and one if it doesnt...and one if Danny Trejo shows up and one if he doesnt

AlexMend:  well when you don't have a solid pre-production plan, you better have sevral plan b's on hand (another lesson learned)

DannyRodriguez03:  Monday morning comes big day......No trejo,(he had to do a pick up for another film) a little bit of rain.......we proceed to go light that day...

DannyRodriguez03:  the complaints begin

DannyRodriguez03:  problems with food and lodging....

DannyRodriguez03:  and rule #1

DannyRodriguez03:  always keep your crew fed right and if you are shooting on location, lodge them right

DannyRodriguez03: both of those were so so on Monday

AlexMend:  oh i thought you were coming back to SAG

DannyRodriguez03:  funny, NOT!!......so Tuesday comes!!!

DannyRodriguez03:  Major rain, rains like it never has

DannyRodriguez03:  power and water goes out in the whole resort

AlexMend:  hold on in there

AlexMend:  let me give the readers some background on this issue

DannyRodriguez03:  make it brief

AlexMend:  i have been in this resort at least 20-30 times in the last two years and a half

AlexMend:  i have been in there in all seasons

AlexMend:  when is hot and when is cold

AlexMend:  when it is sunshine or when it has rained

AlexMend:  when is calm or when there was a threat of a hurricane landing near by

AlexMend:  but...

AlexMend:  I HAVE NEVER SEEN SO MUCH F... WATER POURING BY THE SECOND!!!

AlexMend:  the place was being, LITERALLY, flooded

DannyRodriguez03:  i thought we were shooting the sequel to the last storm

AlexMend:  THE PERFECT STORM TWO, the caretaker of the place with two of his crew were desperately trying to build trenches to

AlexMend:  try to divert some of the waters

AlexMend:  i don't want to make fun of it, but at that moment I thought, that that was what a tsunami most feel like

DannyRodriguez03:  so....my camera dept. comes up to me and say that they cant work if they cant take a hot shower

DannyRodriguez03:  i do a walk around the rooms and find my gaffer inside of our drink tub bathing himself with bottled water telling me: you got to do what you got to do"

AlexMend:  oh yes, we lost power in the whole region, that in turn killed the power at the resort and so forth we couldn't get the water pumps to work

DannyRodriguez03:  i have toilets that are full of ^&%^% since they cant flush...

DannyRodriguez03:  they are bringing buckets from the pool to flush the toilets

DannyRodriguez03:  no lights

DannyRodriguez03:  no heat

AlexMend:  and no lights in a very dark and isolated place

AlexMend:  SPOOOOOOOKY!!!!

DannyRodriguez03: crew ready to walk out

AlexMend:  and this was just your second day

DannyRodriguez03:  they also hate the cook......

DannyRodriguez03:  the food is never ready on time

AlexMend:  are we going back to that issue now?

DannyRodriguez03:  he always runs out of food

AlexMend:  hey, here to my defense.... lack of funds

DannyRodriguez03:  ok...

DannyRodriguez03:  well...i was put in a very tough spot....

DannyRodriguez03:  so here it goes......

DannyRodriguez03:  caretaker tells me that he knows the manager of beachside properties about 2 minutes away

DannyRodriguez03:  i go there

DannyRodriguez03:  i Rent 2 homes, that look like MTVs real world homes....

DannyRodriguez03:  fully furnished, heater, hot water...the works..actual beds.....

DannyRodriguez03:  i send my main crew to these homes

DannyRodriguez03:  now food.......? i go down to the city and go into the first and almost only spot open...DANNYS TACOS

DannyRodriguez03:  there was something about the name

DannyRodriguez03:  i make a deal with him to become our caterer, starting  now!!!

DannyRodriguez03:  I also stop at the market and buy 4 cases of beer and 3 bottles of tequila

DannyRodriguez03:  we boost the spirits all around.....they have warm lodging with electricity, awesome tacos and alcohol......

DannyRodriguez03:  the next morning everyone was ready to go.....

DannyRodriguez03:  i had done my part and now it was time for my crew to do theirs

AlexMend:  did you fired that stupid cook?

DannyRodriguez03:  yup, he was "Let go"

AlexMend:  where did he go?

DannyRodriguez03:  he was now only in charge of breakfast and snacks

AlexMend:  oh, so that was what i was supposed to do then?

AlexMend:  nobody told me

DannyRodriguez03:  i know

DannyRodriguez03:  dont remind me

DannyRodriguez03:  it seems like you were in charge of the female talent

AlexMend:  i wish

AlexMend:  since we have there so many beautiful exponents of the Latina beauty, and yes one gringuita

DannyRodriguez03:  well wed. comes and one of the actors that was suppose to get there tuesday morning still hadnt got there

DannyRodriguez03: we had the whole cast.......and this guy was no where to be found

DannyRodriguez03:  everything was on hold

DannyRodriguez03:  we could not wait anymore, time was $$$ and weather was awesome

DannyRodriguez03:  so I gave the part to my line producer, Carlos

DannyRodriguez03:  next morning the actor that got lost called us and told us he was arrested by the federales

AlexMend:  doing what?

DannyRodriguez03:  who knows, i didnt really buy the story...since he was calling me from LA

DannyRodriguez03:  things worked out better with Carlos, but  I lost my line producer

AlexMend:  danny hold on

AlexMend:  i need to cut this one short (is long already) but i'm being called to send it to NALIP so they can publish the Newsletter, so let's continue next time

AlexMend:  say nite nites and bye byes

DannyRodriguez03:  nite

DannyRodriguez03:  hasta la vista

AlexMend:  no plug this time?

DannyRodriguez03:  next time
