'MARIA' NABS GRAND PRIX AT DEAUVILLE

DEAUVILLE, France -- Film festival favorite "Maria Full of Grace," director-screenwriter Joshua Marston's first film, was awarded the Deauville Festival of American Film's top prize, the Grand Prix for Independent Film, on Sunday. The film, about a young pregnant girl who agrees to use her body to smuggle drugs into the United States as a way to escape her dreary, impoverished existence in Colombia, grabbed two other prizes at the fest's 30th edition. It received the Public Prize, voted for by the audiences in Deauville, and the International Critics' prize, awarded by a jury of seven journalists. Jury president Claude Lelouch and his nine-member, all-female jury awarded the Special Jury Prize to Nicole Kassell's "The Woodsman," the Kevin Bacon-Kyra Sedgwick starrer about a pedophile who attempts to start over after prison. The Prix du Scenario, for the best script, was awarded to Omar Naim's "The Final Cut." (Shiraz Sidhva) FULL STORY

UNI'S 'GANGSTER' AIMS AT RAMIREZ

Dania Ramirez, who starred in Spike Lee's "She Hate Me" and has a role in Ed Zwick's live-action "Fat Albert" for 20th Century Fox, is in negotiations for a coveted role in the Brian Grazer-produced "American Gangster" opposite Denzel Washington and Benicio Del Toro. Antoine Fuqua is directing the Universal Pictures/Imagine Entertainment project, set to start shooting in the fall for release Nov. 4, 2005. "Gangster," previously known as "Tru Blu," is based on a New York Magazine article by Mark Jacobson. Steve Zaillian adapted the work, which centers on real-life Harlem drug lord Frank Lucas (Washington), who rose to power in the early 1970s by smuggling heroin into the United States in the caskets of soldiers killed in Vietnam. After detective Richie Roberts (Del Toro) catches up with him, Lucas cooperates with drug enforcement officials and aids Roberts in a dragnet operation. Ramirez would play a former Miss Puerto Rico who is the wife of Washington's character. (Chris Gardner) FULL STORY

³NOVEDADES² ART EXHIBIT @ THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS

The Clark Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of a new art exhibition entitled ³NOVEDADES² featuring three of our new art faculty at the University of Texas - Pan American: Melissa Lovingood (Jewelry), Yong S. Kim (Paintings) and our very own NALIP member DAVID MARTINEZ (Graphic Design).

This exhibit opens Wednesday, September 15th in the Charles and Dorothy Clark Gallery in the Fine Arts Building at The University of Texas- Pan American and continues through Wednesday, October 20th. A reception with the artists, Melissa Lovingood, Yong S. Kim and David Martinez is scheduled for Thursday evening, October 7th from 7-9pm in the Clark Gallery. Historical objects, particularly those interpreted by a variety of cultures, intrigue Melissa Lovingood. Yong S. Kim also finds inspiration in nature. "Tracing a certain pattern in the wood grain is a reflection of her intention not only to depict a meaningful journey of her life in an abstract form, but also to pursue the highest truth of nature." David Martinez manipulates his photographs "to pay homage to travel, some real, some imaginary, to existence, sometimes real or imaginary and daydreaming."

Admission to all exhibitions is free. The galleries are open Monday through Friday except on university holidays. For more information or for special accommodations please call (956) 381-2655 or email galleries@panam.edu
