BIZ: PALM PICTURES NABS SEBASTIAN CORDERO'S "CRONICAS"

(by Eugene Hernandez, September 1, 2004)

Palm Pictures has acquired Sebastian Cordero's "Cronicas," which debuted earlier this year in the Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard section and will screen at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. Palm will release the film, a Spanish-language crime and suspense thriller starring John Leguizamo, in the second quarter of next year in theaters, followed by a DVD release. "Cronicas" was produced by Anhelo Productions, producers of "The Assassination of Richard Nixon," set for release by THINKFilm and also to be screened in Toronto.

In the film, John Leguizamo stars as Manolo Bonillo, a Miami reporter who travels to Ecuador to cover a series of murders by The Monster of Babahoyo. Cordero's script received the Sundance/NHK award for best Latin American screenplay and also stars Leonor Watling, Alfred Molina, and Damian Alcazar. Palm has also acquired the film's soundtrack, featuring music by Antonio Pinto, who created music for "City of God."

SUNDANCE INSTITUTE DOC FUND ANNOUNCES DOC PROJECT GRANTS

by Sandra Ogle

The Sundance Institute Documentary Fund announced the winners of its second round of 2004 grants this week. A total of $435,000 will be awarded to 11 feature-length documentary films that were selected from over 400 submissions by a panel of film professionals and human rights experts. In the last two years, over $2 million has been distributed to 73 projects in support of films that, according to the fund, "focus on current human rights issues, freedom of expression, social justice, and civil liberties."

This year, the selected films cover a wide range of subjects, ranging from the war in Iraq to Israeli divorce to the lives of immigrants to genocide. "These projects were selected from among the strongest field of submissions we've ever received," said Diane Weyermann, director of Sundance Institute's Documentary Film Program, in a prepared statement. "This is an exciting time for risky, political nonfiction film. Audiences and distribution opportunities for documentary films are increasing, and the marketplace is looking for new and interesting stories."

The fund awards grants in three categories -- Work in progress, development, and supplemental. Supplemental grants are awarded to previous development grant winners whose films are now considered to be works in progress. A full list of the recipients is below. NEW YORKER SEEKS WRITER/PRODUCER

New York based writer/producer seeks a writer (very strong preference for NYC based writer) to collaborate on an unconventional character driven thriller. The writer must possess the following qualities: a) gifted writer knowledgeable about the process (i.e., understands character and story development); b) willingness to work well with others in a low budget independent film setting; c) speed in writing; and d) work ethic matched with creative ambition. Please submit 2 writing samples from 2 different feature scripts you have written plus proof, i.e., WGA registration numbers, that you have written others. This position is very low pay in the beginning, but upon principle photography you will receive additional compensation. The best person for this is probably a writer looking to get their first feature produced who is unsold, but who has worked at the craft of writing a lot. All, however, are welcome so long as you are willing to work with the deal on the table. Submit inquiries to akaison@aol.com

Mis Estimados Compadres y Comadritas,

Una vez mas, here I am confirming to myself how little I know. This past Wednesday, thanks to an invite from my dear virtual friend Reyna Treviño (virtual, because regardless of being in contact with her for more than 3 or 4 years and being invited to several events she handles, I’m still to meet with her personally!)

I attended the Post-Latino Grammy’s Party at Madres in Pasadena (yes, JLo’s restaurant). I attended with my adorable wife and we had a great time walking around the place, enjoying the food, courteously rejecting a kind offer for a $12 mojito, and, following the pointers given by my wife, enjoying my accustomed Taco-De-Ojo (sorry, Michelle, couldn’t resist) while we pulled out the tijeritas and cut out all those committing fashion crimes (favorite sport of my wife and I).

But, and here is the lesson learned, in a packed place I could not find anyone I knew. Not that I am Mr. Popochas and supposed to know everyone (or know everything), but after many (20+) years in the entertainment industry and more than seven of them focused in Latino Entertainment, I’m getting used to always meet friends and acquaintances in any event I attend.

I chalked out to being a “music” industry event, but even so, since many “film” and “tv” talent also crossover into “music” I expected to at least find one or two acquaintances. Now, another puzzling thing was that my wife pointed out to me how many people seemed to recognize my face (the pretty me, you know…) but looked like they couldn’t place the face with the name or position. I told her that is a game we all play, fishing out in a crowd to see how many faces we recognize, I guess as a self proof of our own “arriving there” status.

So this brings me to this thought. In an industry where “who likes you” has more value than “who knows you”, “who you know” or “what you know”, and considering my outing as a Desmemoriado (explained in a previous rambling of mine), how do I ever expect to be successful on it, if after all this many years I can’t find one single familiar face in a crowded and very high profile event?

Well, again, this brings me to the point I have made before… you MOST be there, and then there, and then there, and then there, etc… just like yesterday, at the National Hispanic Media Coalition Luncheon, where not only I met many friends and acquaintances but also initiated some new businesses that promises to be very lucrative.

Like the premise in one of my favorite films, it is all about “Being There”. So see you all there, wherever there may be next.
