NALIP PRODUCERS COMPLETE SECOND LATINO PRODUCERS
ACADEMY™
6 GRADUATES RECEIVE UCLA FILM SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
and VALUABLE PRODUCTION SOFTWARE
Aug. 30, 2004, Santa Monica, CALIFORNIA
14 Feature film producers, 13 documentary makers
and 8 network writer/producers completed the demanding and
inspiring curriculum in NALIP’s Latino Producers Academy™
this past week. Filmmakers applied from 10 states, Puerto
Rico, Canada and Mexico to be invited for one of the coveted
slots in this 7-day intensive. The second Academy again took
place in Tucson, Arizona in association with the UCLA Film
and Television Professional Certificate Program and the UA
Department of Media Arts.
"The Academy is an excellent forum that will have
a profound transformative effect on the Latino production
world," stated LPA 2004 Fellow and noted Boston documentary
maker Juan Mandelbaum at the conclusion of the Second Annual
Latino Producers Academy™. Along with 34 other Fellows, Mandelbaum
traveled to Tucson for the one-week intensive program which
featured development support led by industry professionals
Harrison Reiner of CBS, indie producer Chip Diggins, manager
Marilyn Atlas, UCLA instructor Myrl Schreibman, and Executive
Producer Dennis Leoni. High-Def shooting and editing workshops
were led by KUAT producers Dan Duncan and Hector Gonzalez,
while documentary makers developed their proposals and projects
with the support of WGBH producer Llew Smith, WNET producer
Prudence Glass, "Visiones" Executive Producer Hector Galan,
Paradigm Productions producers Ray Telles and Rick Tejada-Flores,
and PBS executives Gustavo Sagastume and Luca Bentivoglio.
Created and produced by the National Association of Latino
Independent Producers, the LPA is a service to the media field
that supports and prepares Latino media makers, develops their
projects and provides them a network of mentors and professional
relationships.
In addition to the daily 10-hour curriculum in
entertainment law, marketing and distribution, post-production
and special effects, creative collaborations with directors
and composers, Fellows also attended staged readings of their
works-in-progress. Directed by local Tucson theatre luminaries
like Harold Dixon, Samantha Wyer, Deborah Dickey and Susan
Claassen, the readings were performed by a Repertory Company
of 14 actors from New York, Tucson and Los Angeles. These
included Rene Lavan (Latinologues), Geoff Rivas ("C.S.I."),
America Ferrara (REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES), Richard Coca (THE
MEXICAN), and Efren Ramirez (NAPOLEON DYNAMITE).
"This year’s projects were more serious and substantial
than we have seen previously," said NALIP Executive Director
Kathryn Galan. "I sense a change in quantity and caliber of
material we will see, soon, from Latino filmmakers at major
independent festivals, markets and public broadcast venues."
LPA 2003 Fellows include Nelson Dennis, whose
film VOTE FOR ME was screened at Tribeca, Urbanworld and the
2004 Santa Barbara Film Festival; top-ranked comedian Joey
Medina whose movie, EL MATADOR, was picked up for distribution
by Maverick before commissioning a follow-up film from the
producer/director; television executive Dolly Espinal and
producer Diana Rico who have each joined Si-TV! since completing
the 2003 network track, while Henry Robles has taken a staff
writing position at Fox; New York documentary producer Natalia
Almada, who received Sundance Documentary Fund monies and
LINCS producer Bienvenida Matias whose Guam documentary also
received funding since the 2003 Academy.
"This year we added an invitation to producer/director
or producer/writer teams," explains NALIP Signature Programs
Director Octavio, a theatrical film producer in his own right
who has overseen his second Producers Academy. "Collaborators
were able to work with mentors on their project development
and production plans. I think these films will really get
made – we attracted filmmakers who were ready to use the LPA
resources and go to work."
Two LPA 2004 fellows received scholarships to
the UCLA School of Film and Television Professional Certificate
Program: Marta Masferrer will attend the UCLA Professional
Screenwriting Program; Sonia Malfa was awarded the scholarship
to the Professional Program in Producing. In addition, LPA
Sponsor Final Draft awarded two copies of its 7.0 software
to filmmakers Oskar Toruno and Alex Zacarias. Gorilla Software
trained makers on their budgeting and scheduling system, and
provided software to LPA Fellows Carolina Paiz and Jaime Escallon-Buraglia.
The Latino Producers Academy™ is funded by a generous
consortium of philanthropic, government and corporate sources
that include the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation,
the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Walt
Disney Company, Univision, Nielsen Media Research, the Hollywood
Foreign Press Association, Southwest Airlines, P.O.V./American
Documentary, Latino Public Broadcasting, Cox Communications,
PackAir and the Tucson Film Office. The Opening Reception
and premiere screening of PBS series "Visiones" was hosted
by Cox, Southwest and the Tucson Film Office, with artist
support for featured performer Lalo Guerrero supplied by the
National Association of Latino Arts and Culture. This event
was open to the Tucson general public.
Local Tucson sponsorship support makes the Academy
possible, starting with the instructors, directors, interns,
equipment and instruction space provided by the University
of Arizona Department of Media Arts. Additional support was
graciously supplied by Costa Construction, FedEx/Kinko’s of
Tucson, Kahlil Bottling Company and the Arizona Theatre Company.
Volunteer support came from NALIP’s Tucson Chapter, spearheaded
by local filmmakers Ben Lopez and Guiomar Romero.

“American Latino to Debut in #1 Timeslot in
Los Angeles”
8.23.04
American Latino is set to debut on 10/4/04 with
a clearance list which is at an all time high of over 71 markets
(about 50% more markets than Urban Latino in its current season),
over 54 million HHs and almost 85% of Hispanic Homes.
In addition to over 20 additional new markets
(Nashville, St. Louis, Reno, Raleigh, etc.) American Latino
TV is debuting in the nation’s #1 Latin market during the
coveted Sunday @ 12:30 AM time period on KABC – 7.
KABC is scheduling American Latino TV right
behind the #1 show in the market Sundays @ 11:30 PM “The Practice”.
As you will see in the May HH Overnight tracking
system below, “The Practice” averaged an enormous (and almost
unheard of in today’s fragmented media environment) double
digit share in the market (3.7/11), by far the #1 show in
its time slot in Los Angeles! Given “Urban Latino TV’s” history
of consistently improving upon lead in share in Los Angeles,
American Latino should perform much better than “Larry Sanders”
(the show currently in “American Latino’s” Future time period).
This translates to the BEST possible scenario
for American Latino TV in the nation’s #1 Latin Market, Los
Angeles which will of course, have a big impact on overall
delivery nationally.

Nosotros American Latino Film Festival - Call
for Entrees
Contact: Henry K. Priest @ (213)739-3385
(Hollywood, Ca) Ricardo Montalban and Nosotros,
a non profit organization, announce the official call for
entrees for the first annual Nosotros American Latino Film
Festival. A goal set back in 1970 by Ricardo Montalbán, "to
improve the image of Latinos in the entertainment industry"
comes to fruition at the newly named Ricardo Montalban Theatre
November 5th - 7th, 2004.(1615 N. Vine St., Hollywood, Ca
90028)
From Chicanos in East Los Angeles to Cubanos in
Miami, American Latino filmmakers represent the diverse Latino
cultures found in the US landscape. The goal of the festival
is to provide an opportunity to display the artistic creativity
of the broad spectrum of American Latinos by showcasing films
that share their life experiences, traditions, and culture.
The festival committee seeks to showcase films that speak
to mainstream audience and the growing American Latino population.
The event is produced by festival directors Henry
K. Priest and Shawna Baca. They say it’s the “answer to Hollywood’s
diversity campaign which provides what Hollywood executives
have sought after, more Latinos in front of the camera and
behind the camera producing quality work that can reach ethnic
and mainstream audiences. It’s the answer to Hollywood’s quest
for Latin talent behind the camera.“
The Nosotros American Latino Film Festival has
sprouted from the very successful Nosotros Latin Filmmakers
Showcase produced November 2003. The event showcased films
produced by members of Nosotros with production experience
behind the camera. With the success for the event and expressed
interest from the entertainment industry professionals, Nosotros
will continue to showcase films made by Nosotros members and
embrace the opportunity to showcase the work of non-members
as well. Along with showcasing films the festival will come
alive in an array of ways as it will present workshops for
filmmakers and actors, a Latin talent showcase and other festive
activities. It’s “the place to be” for Hollywood professionals
looking to meet the up and coming Latin filmmakers.
Over the years the organization has provided many
resources for Latin talent in front of the camera such as
acting workshops, talent showcases and production of the annual
Golden Eagle Awards, which presents awards to Latinos that
have made an impact in the entertainment industry.
In recent years, there has been a recent display
of new energy and ideas from a new generation of Latinos in
the entertainment industry. This inspired the development
of a committee within Nosotros known as the US Generation.
Under the leadership of the Nosotros board, the US Generation
committee members have spearheaded many new programs for Latinos
in front of the camera such as networking brunches, dancing
classes, casting director workshops, and the distribution
of the Nosotros Latin Talent directory.
Also, the organization has implemented programs
for members behind the camera such as writers workshops, directors
workshop, producing workshops, and the new Nosotros Filmmakers
Network, all in an attempt to meet the original mission statement
of the organization and to fulfill the 34 year dream of its’
founding member Ricardo Montalban. With a new home located
at the recently named Ricardo Montalban Theater, formerly
known as the James A. Doolittle Theater, Nosotros continually
provides services to it’s members on a daily basis and hosts
weekly meetings to support it’s members that serve the organization
at various capacities. On any given day there are a variety
of resources provided by the organization to its’ membership.
The Nosotros American Latino Film Festival seeks to showcase
the talent that the organization actively promotes through
it various programs.

eyes of the people who live in the border region or have experienced
“the border” in one way or another. Thus, rather than studying
the border from outside, the festival will create an analysis
from within. We will also place an emphasis on the individual
and communal border identity; illustrating the trans-cultural
features that adapt, enrich and renew on a daily basis. The
event will be accompanied by a multidisciplinary expo that
will include painting, photography, instillation, performance
and music.
Deadline for entries: October 15 (early entries
will receive priority consideration) No entry fee. The festival
is not competitive All entries that deal with one or more
of the themes mentioned above will be considered Submission:

COMO PEZ FUERA DEL AGUA
(for those bilingually challenged: LIKE FISH OUT OF THE WATER)
Mis Estimados Compadres y Comadritas,
Una
vez mas, here I am confirming to myself how little I know.
This past Wednesday, thanks to an invite from my dear virtual
friend Reyna Treviño (virtual, because regardless of being
in contact with her for more than 3 or 4 years and being invited
to several events she handles, I’m still to meet with her
personally!)
I
attended the Post-Latino Grammy’s Party at Madres in Pasadena
(yes, JLo’s restaurant). I attended with my adorable wife
and we had a great time walking around the place, enjoying
the food, courteously rejecting a kind offer for a $12 mojito,
and, following the pointers given by my wife, enjoying my
accustomed Taco-De-Ojo (sorry, Michelle, couldn’t resist)
while we pulled out the tijeritas and cut out all those committing
fashion crimes (favorite sport of my wife and I).
But,
and here is the lesson learned, in a packed place I could
not find anyone I knew. Not that I am Mr. Popochas and supposed
to know everyone (or know everything), but after many (20+)
years in the entertainment industry and more than seven of
them focused in Latino Entertainment, I’m getting used to
always meet friends and acquaintances in any event I attend.
I
chalked out to being a “music” industry event, but even so,
since many “film” and “tv” talent also crossover into “music”
I expected to at least find one or two acquaintances. Now,
another puzzling thing was that my wife pointed out to me
how many people seemed to recognize my face (the pretty me,
you know…) but looked like they couldn’t place the face with
the name or position. I told her that is a game we all play,
fishing out in a crowd to see how many faces we recognize,
I guess as a self proof of our own “arriving there” status.
So
this brings me to this thought. In an industry where “who
likes you” has more value than “who knows you”, “who you know”
or “what you know”, and considering my outing as a Desmemoriado
(explained in a previous rambling of mine), how do I ever
expect to be successful on it, if after all this many years
I can’t find one single familiar face in a crowded and very
high profile event?
Well, again, this brings me to the point I have
made before… you MOST be there, and then there, and then there,
and then there, etc… just like yesterday, at the National
Hispanic Media Coalition Luncheon, where not only I met many
friends and acquaintances but also initiated some new businesses
that promises to be very lucrative.
Like the premise in one of my favorite films,
it is all about “Being There”. So see you all there, wherever
there may be next.
