NALIP PUERTO RICO HOSTS SUCCESSFUL WORKSHOP FOR
FILMMAKERS
Cine Ballajá's Digital Theater in San Juan's Old
City was the site for NALIP Puerto Rico's well-attended July
9th Filmmakers Workshop, which featured seminars by Women
Make Movies Executive Director Debra Zimmerman, Independent
Television Service (ITVS) Programming Manager Richard Saiz,
and independent filmmaker and NALIP New York Member Ela Troyano.
During the morning session, Debra provided a wide-ranging
presentation on film distribution and marketing, using the
closing section to focus on the do's and don't's of working
film festivals successfully to gain exposure for both documentary
and narrative works. Following the lunch break, Richard discussed
ITVS's upcoming August Open Call, providing details on the
kinds of projects his organization seeks and tips on how to
prepare a winning funding proposal. A case study presentation
of Ela Troyano's work-in-progress documentary on the late
Cuban entertainer extraordinaire La Lupe gave attendees the
chance to learn about the funding and production experience
straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.
The event, which was co-sponsored by the Puerto
Rico Commonwealth government's Corporación para el Desarrollo
de las Artes, Ciencias e Industria Cinematográfica de Puerto
Rico and PBS affiliate TUTV (WIPR-Channels 6 and 3) and organized
