LPM issue goes to
Washington
The battle over the launch of Nielsen Media Research's
Local People Meter service is going to Capitol Hill. Sens.
Conrad Burns, R-Mont., and Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., said
Friday that the Senate Communications Subcommittee will hold a
hearing on the issue July 15. Burns also urged Nielsen to
"cease the use of the new LPM system in New
York and delay any further rollouts
until they have committed to an independent review." Despite a
massive campaign by minority advocacy groups, supported by
News Corp., Nielsen proceeded with its June 3 launch of its
LPM system in New
York, which is yet to receive
accreditation by the Media Rating Council after failing its
first audit. The company is now actively working on the LPM
rollouts in Los Angeles and
Chicago, planned for this
summer. Nielsen Media Research is owned by VNU, parent company
of The Hollywood Reporter. (Nellie Andreeva)
