What's a Film Slam? It's like a poetry slam but with flicks: people show up with their best five minutes of their film or video cued up. We show the films randomly (NO first come, first serve--we want you to hang out!), the filmmaker is introduced and can say a couple of words and the night goes on like that. from 7-7:45: we collect the vids (VHS, DVD format) from 8-10p: we watch the vids WHERE?? The Slam/Mixer is generously hosted by Smokin’ Mirrors Studios, 4928 Hollywood Blvd, and will offer live DJ entertainment from 10 p.m. to midnight immediately following the screenings.

IT WILL STILL BE COMPETITIVE

Here's what's at stake: 1st Prize: Cash! 2nd Prize: Automatic Entry into the Smokin' Mirrors Film Festival end of July 3rd Prize: TBD We are charging a nominal fee of $3. It will be FREE for competing mediamakers. How will the films be judged? The audience will be given anonymous ballots where they rate the film from "Nice Try" to "Boo-Yah" and anywhere in between. Sort of like an un-American Idol. You don't want to miss this!!

A Letter from a NALIP member

Dora,

You have been so kind & generous with information, I wanted to share this good bit of news with you.

After your encouragement, I decided to send the director of our film ˇSalsa Caliente! to the NALIP convention several months ago. Our production company was one of the scholarship recipients, which made it affordable & possible for her to attend. From that convention, our documentary made it into the hands of a producer from WNET, the PBS station in New York. Throughout the month of September, Thirteen/WNET New York will present its 14th annual CANTOS LATINOS, a multi-faceted celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month featuring programs on an array of relevant subjects and themes.

WNET is broadcast to millions of viewers in the New York, New Jersey & Connecticut tri-state area. They will be showcasing our film, ˇSalsa Caliente! on their station sometime during the month. We are so thrilled & I wanted to say thank you for guidance and encouragement.

CBS TELEVISION DIVERSITY INSTITUTE WRITERS MENTORING PROGRAM NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THE 2005 SESSION

Applications are now being accepted for the second session of the successful CBS Diversity Institute’s Writers Mentoring Program. All completed materials, which include two writing samples (one original piece and one "spec" episode of an hour or half hour scripted television series currently on the air) and signed release forms must be postmarked no later than August 2, 2004.

For more information and an application visit www.cbsdiversity.com.

The program begins the first week of January 2005 and runs through the end of May 2005. The Writers Mentoring Program helps aspiring writers understand the unwritten rules of breaking in and moving up in the business. Each participant is matched with two mentors – one is a CBS series showrunner and the other is a CBS creative executive. Participants meet regularly with their mentors for advice and support on improving their writing skills as well as career advice and guidance.

The primary focus of CBS’s Diversity Institute Writers Mentoring Program is to provide access and networking opportunities for talented and motivated writers of diverse backgrounds – especially writers of color. Henry Robles, one of the first session’s participates has been hired as a staff writer on CBS’ hit drama COLD CASE. Lisa Parsons has been hired as a staff writer on ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT. The Writers Mentoring Program is not employment and there is no monetary compensation. It is, instead, a structured program of career development, support, and personal access to executives and decision-making processes; with the goal of preparing aspiring writers for later employment opportunities in television.

Smokin' Mirros Studios Gears Up for

Corto Mundial: A Festival of Word-Class Short Film

Third Annual Outsider/Insider Film Fest Scheduled for July 23 & 24; Submissions Welcome

Hollywood, CA—Smokin' Mirrors Studios kicks off the third edition of its annual East Hollywood short film spectacular on Friday, July 23rd with a hosted reception, screenings, and an after-party featuring live local music as well as a slew of Southern California's funkiest DJs.

Festival creator and director Francisco Hernandez has issued an open call to short filmmakers from around the world. As always, he stresses the fact that there are no submission fees to enter. Filmmakers who want their work returned are simply asked to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

"It gets costly and discouraging. With festival submission fees starting at $30, filmmakers have to set aside a significant portion of their budgets just to show their work," says Hernández, explaining the reason behind his decision not to charge a submission fee. "For short filmmakers, who already work with minimal budgets, it can become a major obstacle." He adds that short filmmakers have fewer venues for exhibition and limited opportunities for distribution.

Corto Mundial was founded to provide a home for short film and to celebrate those brave artists who labor under the radar in LA, often overshadowed within the feature-length film and episodic television climate. Hernández, along with festival co-coordinators Fabiola Torres (Professor, Glendale City College), Patrick Perez, (UCLA Film School) and Maria Murillo (Director, Cine Chatota) strive to present a spectrum of Pacific Rim, Chicano, Hip-Hop and Urban artists working in digital media.

The festival is slated to run from Friday, July 23 through Saturday, July 24 at Smokin' Mirrors Studios, (4928 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90027) and offers two complete programs of the edgiest short film and video available. In addition, each night will feature a selection of short film world premieres, live music and the traditional hosted cocktail reception.Festival admission will be $10 per person per each night.

Corto Mundial will exhibit selected short films from around the world against a stunning backdrop of the work by some of LA's coolest visual artists. Festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. on both nights. Tickets will be sold at the door and include the hosted reception as well as film screenings and DJ after-party.

To submit a short film, contact Francisco Hernandez at 323.906.2937. Entries can be mailed c/o Corto Mundial, 4928 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90027.
