THE LATINO FILM SLAM ! !

This month's Film Slam will be different, more exciting, thrills, spills, & chills ! !

Because Sharing Is Caring, please forward to anyone who wants to have a good time.

For the uninitiated: What's a Film Slam?
It's like a poetry slam but with flicks:  people show up with their best five minutes of their film or video cued up. We show the films randomly (NO first come, first serve--we want you to hang out!), the filmmaker is introduced and can say a couple of words and the night goes on like that.

from 7-7:45:  we collect the vids (VHS, DVD format)
from 8-10p:   we watch the vids

WHERE??
The Slam/Mixer is generously hosted by Smokin’ Mirrors Studios,
4928 Hollywood Blvd, and will offer live DJ entertainment from 10 p.m. to midnight immediately following the screenings.

WHAT'S DIFFERENT THIS TIME AROUND?
This time, it will be a competition to the death, gladiator-style!
Okay, no para tanto pero here's what's at stake:

1st Prize:    Cash!
2nd Prize:   Automatic Entry into the Smokin' Mirrors Film Festival in July
3rd Prize:    The FREE use of the Smokin' Mirrors space for shooting

We are charging a nominal fee of $3 for spectators. FREE admission for competing artists.

How will the films be judged?

The audience will be given anonymous ballots where they rate the film from "Basura" to "Liking it Un Chingon" and anywhere in between. Sort of like an un-American Idol.

You don't want to miss this!!

National Association of Latino Independent Producers is proud to be a Participating Organization of the 2004 Los Angeles Film Festival (June 17 – 26)

National Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP) will be hosting a screening of Maria Full of Grace on Thursday, June 24 at 7:15pm at the Laemmle Sunset 5.

Maria Full of Grace

Surprisingly self-confident and outspoken, 17-year-old Maria desperately wants to escape a life of mind-numbing work in rural Colombia. Forced into a corner by circumstances, she succumbs to the lure of quick cash by agreeing to act as a “mule,” a drug courier who smuggles heroin into the United States, via the most harrowing plane trip of her life. Maria Full of Grace marks the auspicious debuts of two remarkably gifted talents: writer/director Joshua Marston and actress Catalina Sandino Moreno. Marston’s assured, understated directorial style provides the perfect platform for Moreno, an actress of strength and resolve whose portrayal of Maria is pitch perfect. English and Spanish with English subtitles. 101 min.

Thursday, June 24, 7:15pm, Laemmle Sunset 5

Wed. June 23, 10:00pm, Laemmle Sunset 5

Fri. June 25, 5:00pm, Laemmle Sunset 5

Robbing Peter

With a refreshingly original style, writer/director Mario F. de la Vega reinvents the crime genre, bringing a deadpan sense of humor and absurdity to this tale of smugglers, crime bosses, and second-rate thugs.

Tue. June 22, 9:45pm, Laemmle Sunset 5

Fri. June 25, 7:15pm, DGA 1
