NALIP LA, Smokin' Mirrors & SubCine Present: Hollywood Video Slam JUNE 3RD ! ! !

Share your work - Meet other Latino media makers - Shake your groove thing to tunes after the screening.

What's a Film Slam?
It's like a poetry slam but with flicks:  people show up with their best five minutes of their film or video cued up. We show the films randomly (NO first come, first serve--we want you to hang out!), the filmmaker is introduced and can say a couple of words and the night goes on like that.

from 7-7:45:  we collect the vids (VHS, DVD format)
from 8-10p:   we watch the vids

The Slam/Mixer is generously hosted by Smokin’ Mirrors Studios, 4928 Hollywood Blvd, and will offer live DJ entertainment from 10 p.m. to midnight immediately following the screenings. The event is free and open to the public.  For more info, email Sonia Gonzalez:  LaSone189@aol.com.

MEMBER NEWS: Pepe Urquijo’s documentary “Of Mexican Descent” (OMD) leads audiences through the world of a Los Angeles music industry not often seen—underground Chicano Hiphop. With the members of the Hiphop group of the same name as guides, 2Mex and Xololanxinxo, “OMD” shows us insightful glimpses of this world and how OMD the group survives as smart artists—performers who independently control the creation, production and distribution of their music. The end result is not a music video, but instead an entertaining how-to-guide that also spotlights the duo's personalities. Pepe is please to announce that OMD was recently screened in New York’s famed Tribeca Film Festival. DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN, the cheeky feature co-written by our own Sergio Guerrero is screening in 50 theatres in Southern Califas right now!

Raquel Almazan will perform excerpts from her collaborative performance piece She Wolves during -scopeLos Angeles as part of the Cinema-scope opening reception.  She Wolves depicts women through four female archetypes [the Ancient Warrior, the Falsely Enlightened Corset, the Modern C.E.O. and Futuristic Virgin Stripper] in an absurdist fashion.  The four archetypes collide in this multi-layered collaboration of movement, media and text.  Excerpts of the video piece, She Wolves, created by Almazan in collaboration with Tatiana Sainz will also be presented during -scopeLos Angeles at The Standard Hotel in downtown LA from May 21 through 24. Capitol Hill may get into Nielsen brouhaha

Some lawmakers on the House Commerce Committee are calling for a congressional investigation into the accuracy of data derived from Nielsen Media Research's new Local People Meter. Nielsen has come under increasing pressure to justify LPM data, which critics say undercounts minorities. Nielsen has maintained that the system actually delivers more accurate data, and noted this week that numbers show blacks and Hispanics are watching more cable TV than broadcast.   Yahoo!/Reuters/Hollywood Reporter (5/13),   Media Life (5/12)

Set in Barcelona, the film tells the story of Elisa, whose dreams of a better life in Spain land her in the world of international prostitution.  Trapped in an economy driven by crooked cops and international traffickers, Elisa struggles to regain her freedom and return to her children in Uruguay.  From showdowns with sleazy bosses to battles with Brazilian cross-dressers, writer/director Beatrice Flores Silva uses Almodovaresque touches to provide a colorful treatment of the perils facing women today.   This fascinating film is filled with many humorous and uplifting moments. AMERICA'S HEART AND SOUL

Documentary

Director, Producer, Cinematographer: Louis Schwartzberg Featuring the original song "The World Don't Bother Me None" by: John Mellencamp Executive Producer: Jake Eberts

America is a vast country three thousand miles from end to end.  But it's not the land that makes America so special it's the people.  Filmmaker Louis Schwartzberg packed up his camera and hit the road, with a goal of capturing both the unparalleled beauty of the land and

the incomparable sprit of the people. Through his movie, "America's Heart and Soul," you'll have the chance to meet ordinary Americans with extraordinary stories. Louis's gift is his ability to connect with people, honestly capturing their values, dreams, and passion in an

awe-inspiring journey that reveals the stories - unusual, captivating, inspiring and emotional - that make us into something more than a collection of individuals. "America's Heart and Soul" is a celebration of a nation told through the voices of its people.
