AUSTIN, TEXAS LAUNCHES NALIP CHAPTER TO GREAT FANFARE

I'm glad to report that the NALIP_AUSTIN launch party last night (May 11) was a huge success!  According to our sign-in sheets, 54 people came. Of those, 19 indicated interest in rolling up their sleeves to help shape the organization further.

The attendees were mostly from Austin and central Texas (Buda, Del Valle, San Marcos, Round Rock, Manchaca), and from as far off as Houston.  Several NALIPSTERS from Dora's well-oiled machine in San Anto (TXNALIP) came as a show of support.

Hector Galan was a GREAT speaker and extraordinarily gracious, staying after his talk to answer questions and chat with whomever approached him.  I think that really made a difference in making attendees feel that NALIP was an organization they would want to be a part of.

Many of those who attended are NOT NALIP members.  Of those who said they wanted to work on the organizing committee, we informed them that they would need to join the organization, as indicated in NALIP chapter guidelines. We (Manuel, Rupert and I) will be sure to keep this present in future meetings.

People Meter pulls in protesters

The battle over the launch of Nielsen Media Research's local People Meter service came to Los Angeles on Monday as activists held a news conference on the steps of City Hall to criticize Nielsen for what its detractors view as a systemic problem of undercounting minority television viewership. "If Nielsen gets its way, minority viewership could be dramatically undercounted, and the civil rights of Latinos and African Americans will be shortchanged with less programming, less economic opportunities and less influence in the media marketplace," said Alex Nogales, president of the National Hispanic Media Coalition. "This is an issue of civil rights for the entire entertainment industry." Joining Nogales at the morning news conference organized by the Don't Count Us Out coalition of advocacy groups and lawmakers were Rep. Hilda Solis, D-Los Angeles, Los Angeles City Council members Bernard Parks and Jan Perry and producers Moctesuma Esparza ("Selena"), Josefina Lopez ("Real Women Have Curves") and Dennis Leoni (Showtime's "Resurrection Blvd."). Editor’s Note: Mis estimados compinches, this is a MAJOR ISSUE for our future including that of our children. Of all the issues that concern our ability to be successful in the industry, the counting of our people in the minds of advertisers and programmers is of the outmost importance. Please support this effort visiting their web site to get informed and to sign an online petition letter. DO IT NOW! http://www.dontcountusout.com/

ON THE SCENE ®: DISPATCH FROM CANNES: Day One Dawning with Almodovar in the Spotlight  (by Eugene Hernandez, May 12, 2004)  Cannes coverage presented by the Sundance Channel's Anatomy of a Scene

A new season of international cinema will kick off today (Wednesday) with the opening of the 57th Festival de Cannes in France. Filmmakers, industry execs, and journalists from around the world arrived here in
Cannes yesterday, jamming nearby Nice-Cote d'Azur airport before making their way to the already bustling Croisette to get settled in for this year's fest. At the Palais des Festivals, security was expectedly tight with attendees subjected to bag searches and individual wand scans by guards. Amidst ongoing terrorism concerns at high profile events such as Cannes, locals are also keeping an eye on arts protestors who have vowed to disrupt this year's festival to voice their frustration over government employment
benefits.

“HBO shares our commitment to supporting and showcasing Latino film and this competition will take that commitment to another level,” said Calixto Chinchilla, Founder and Director of NYILFF.  “The Festival has presented different types of screenwriting and pitching session competitions, but this one will give an emerging filmmaker the unique opportunity to realize a project from beginning to end.”

The details for the competition are as follows:

·         Filmmakers should submit completed scripts for a narrative short film, maximum 5 minutes long, plus a filmmaker reel or previously produced short by May 31, 2004 to NYILFF, c/o HBO SHORT FILM CONTEST, P.O. Box 72 New York, NY 10023

“HBO understands the challenges of finding fresh voices and stories that speak to the Latino experience and we’ve been actively pursuing this area for awhile,” said Olivia Smashum, executive vice president, subscriber marketing and business development at HBO. “Along with the NYILFF, this competition allows us to continue to support the development and promotion of new Latino talent, and on a broader base, help capture the attention and cultural diversity of Latinos on film.”

The New York International Latino Film Festival is the first festival in New York City to showcase the works of national Latino filmmakers alongside international Latin American films, while offering expansive images of the Latino experience. The festival presents works in the categories of Feature Film (in Spanish and English) and Vanguard Cinema, which includes experimental works, documentaries, student works and short films.  The 6‑day festival also includes panel discussions, parties, educational forums and special events.  The festival will be presented in July 2004 (official dates of the festival to be announced shortly).
