SPREAD THE WORD - PASA LA VOZ

On May 14 - the most important Latino film of the year will be out it's called... A Day Without A Mexican. It's about what would happen one day if all the Latinos in California disappeared. Who would mow the lawns, pick the fruits, wash the cars and do all the menial jobs that so many take for granted? The film is co-written by NALIP member Sergio Guerrero, who also served as an associate producer.

This film is about cultural appreciation. We need your support. Latinos need to be recognized. Please spread the word by downloading this image and promoting the movie in any way you can (put the flyer up at work or at your neighborhood restaurant or at your give it to your friends). Thank you all... Mil Gracias!

Diversifying American Cinema: Industry Voices Tackle the Topic

(by Eugene Hernandez, May 5, 2004) Tribeca coverage presented by Sony

The genesis of this article was a recent SXSW panel discussion on the "state of independent film" that included panelists Michael Barker from Sony Classics, former producer and rep John Pierson, Film Movement's Larry Meistrich, Micah Green from Cinetic Media,
Newmarket's Bob Berney, Magnolia's Eamonn Bowles, and former UA and October head Bingham Ray. During the
session, New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell raised a question about the lack of new African-American filmmakers emerging since the movement led by Spike Lee back in the '80s.
Sitting in the audience listening to the panel of white males tackling the topic I was reminded that ethnic diversity is a major challenge within the specialized and/or independent film industry.

In fact there is a lack diversity at all levels of the industry: filmmakers, producers, screenwriters, below-the-line, in acquisitions, production, distribution and exhibition, development, and indeed among journalists and at editorial publications. Is this absence within the industry the reason for the lack of diversity in American cinema? To try to answer this question, I recently posed a number of questions, by email, to 75 film community insiders, feeling that it would better inform me as I prepared to moderate a panel discussion on this topic at The Tribeca Film Festival on Wednesday and thinking that it might also make a useful
article. Of the 75 people that I emailed last week, about a dozen responded and the results were quite provocative and detailed. The quotes below only scratch the surface, each participant replied with lengthy, detailed responses.

TELEVISION
SMART AND SASSY JUDY REYES
by Julio Martinez
When NBC premiered its unlikely hospital-based sitcom Scrubs a few season back, the pundits thought the network had gone crazy. After all, the demise of CBS's Chicago Hope and City of Angels, as well as the steadily declining NBC's own ER, was proof enough that the medical show genre had run its cycle of popularity. Well, the experts were wrong.

Final Thursday Nationals: NBC Wins; CBS Rock Solid No. 2  (Mediaweek.com)
Ignited by the second-to-last episode of Friends, not to mention the season finale of Will & Grace and old faithful ER, NBC won Thursday in the three surveyed categories. Second was CBS thanks to its non-stop combination of Survivor: All-Stars, CSI and Without A Trace. Friends took top-rated honors for the evening among adults 18-49 (11.2/32) while the Eye net's CSI was the most-watched show with 26.37 million viewers.
