Thirteen Set for Sundance's June Filmmakers and Screenwriters Lab  (by Eugene Hernandez, April 30, 2004)

Sundance Institute has unveiled participants for June's Filmmakers and Screenwriters Labs at the Sundance Village in Utah. This year's Filmmaker's Lab will run from May 25 - June 24, featuring three weeks of work on narrative projects by eight filmmakers and then a week in which a group of screenwriters arrive to work on their scripts with advisors.

"The projects selected for the Lab represent the distinctive and innovative voices of an exciting group of emerging filmmakers from the U.S. and around the world," said Michelle Satter, Director of the Sundance Institute Feature Film Program, in a prepared statement. "Individually, and as a whole, the projects explore the diversity and complexity of our contemporary culture with originality, humor, and emotional truth. During the Lab, the filmmakers will have the opportunity to further develop their talent and projects in a creative community that values risk-taking and bold ideas."

Editor’s Note: Included on the 13 selected there is a Latino:

Orlando "Dito" Montiel (writer/director), "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints," U.S.A.: A quintessentially American story of a young man's hunger for experience, his dawning awareness of the bigger world across the bridge, and of the loyalties that bind him to a violent past and to the flawed and desperate saints that have guided him.

Editor’s Note: This IS MY VERY LARGE, BIG, HUMANGOUS, BIEN GRANDE RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU DO NOT MISS THIS OUTSTANDING FILM. I got to see it at the last LALIFF and have been looking forward for its release since then, so I can take all my family and friends to see it. Please excuse my insistence, you all know I rarely do this, but this one more than deserves the praise. Just a word of caution, if you don’t like sweet small simple films, this may not be your cup of te…, but even so, if you still like good filmmaking, this one is inspiring.

This controversial, outlandish comedy by filmmaker Luis Estrada, portrays the growing corruption and scandalous conduct of a newly appointed rural political leader as he attempts to lead (and prod) a sleepy Mexican village into the modern world.

Estrada, one of the new generation of Mexican filmmakers, released this wacky, sarcastic film in 1999. In 2000, it won the Best Latin American Film Award at the Sundance Film Festival.

Please tell your friends and join us at TBH as we celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Latino and American filmmaking. Talento Bilingue de Houston is an Artist in Education Program of the Texas Commission on the Arts through the Southwest Alternate Media Project and is supported by the Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County and by people like you.

New Production Funding Initiative from CPB
CHICAGO PRE-PROPOSAL CONFERENCE: Tuesday, May 11, 2004

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting has launched a new multi-million
dollar programming initiative. America at a Crossroads represents a major
effort by CPB to fulfill its mandate to promote programs that inform,
enlighten, and enrich the public dialogue about crucial public affairs
issues, and enhance the knowledge and citizenship of all Americans. This
initiative focuses on the post-9/11 world and how it has affected the
American imagination as well as our political, economic, cultural and
social realities, our security and our relationship with other nations.
The RFP is available at http://www.cpb.org/tv/funding/crossroads/.

To better answer questions about the initiative, we are conducting a
pre-proposal conference. CPB staff will be on hand, and there will be a
panel of experts to discuss some of the major themes that might make for
good productions. There will be ample time for questions and a small
