NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LATINO INDEPENDENT PRODUCERS RETEAMS WITH WGAE and NYILFF TO DEVELOP NEW LATINO/A SCREENWRITING PROFESSIONALS

NALIP (National Association of Latino Independent Producers) returns to New York with its Second National Latino Writers Lab, starting Thursday, April 22.  This four day intensive brings 24 writers from around the nation to do intensive development on works-in-progress, to meet with agents and producers, and to have one-on-one mentoring with leading industry professionals.  NALIP’s Signature program will be presented again with the support and association of the Writers Guild of America East and the New York International Latino Film Festival.

“Last year, we inaugurated this program to develop Latino/a film and television writers,” says NALIP Board Chair Frances Negron-Muntaner.  “Writers represented eight states and the commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and not only matured their craft, but met producer/funders and were signed by agents and managers.”

This year’s program was even more competitive than in 2003:  writers applied to be invited to the New York Lab that will be directed by CBS Story analyst and UCLA instructor Harrison Reiner.  The Lab was also expanded so that it includes 45 hours of seminar time, professional lunches with producers, agents, WGAE execs and entertainment attorneys, plus one-on-one mentoring sessions with such writers as Alfredo de Villa, Chap Taylor, Carlos Davis and Legiah Villalobos.

The Writers Guild of America, East is pleased to continue its partnership with NALIP in co-sponsoring the Latino Writers Lab in New York City. Our Guild is committed to extending its resources to nurture writers from diverse backgrounds and experiences to ensure their stories are told," states Herb Sargent, President, Writers Guild of America, East.

Sited midtown, at the Roger Smith Hotel, NALIP’s Latino Writers Lab is sponsored by the hotel and the WGAE, as well as the Rockefeller Foundation, the Ford Foundation and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.  This support brings instructor/mentors to New York including Cari-Esta Albert (THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS), Tracy Poust (“WILL & GRACE”), Kathy de Marco (UNDEFEATED) and Paul de Souza, (LONE HERO), plus provides rooming scholarships for out-of-town writers.

“More material and well-developed scripts means two things:  more viable Latino/a projects for packaging and production and more Latino/a writers ready to work on assignments, rewrites, and series staffs,” says NALIP Executive Director Kathryn Galan.  “While Latino representation on shows and features still hovers around the 2 – 4% level, NALIP will do anything possible to develop, expose and support our talented writers.”

Tales of Self-Distribution: "Robot Stories," "Maestro," "The Gatekeeper," and "Superstar in a Housedress"  (by Rania Richardson, April 19, 2004)

The current crop of self-distributing filmmakers is zeroing in on target niche markets to develop audiences for their films. Charming and articulate, the filmmakers of "Robot Stories,"
"Maestro," "The Gatekeeper," and "Superstar in a Housedress" are presenting their works to their own specialized communities and reeling in additional viewers using extraordinary marketing efforts. With the exception of "Maestro," theater bookings and some publicity functions for the films have been delegated to consultants, a factor that some might say would classify them as service deals, but the tireless work of these filmmakers has earned them the right to say they were front and center of the distribution of their films. Rania Richardson reports.

LatinHeat Reception honors Luis Alberto Urrea and release of his new book The Devil’s Highway; Film rights for gut-wrenching story have been optioned by CDI Productions.

Hollywood, CA—LatinHeat, a popular entertainment industry magazine, will honor award-winning author, journalist and poet Luis Alberto Urrea and the release of his new and powerful book, The Devil’s Highway (Little, Brown), on Wednesday, April 21, 2004, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Dutton’s Bookstore in the Brentwood suburb of Los Angeles, California.

In May 2001, 26 men from Mexico set out together on a journey, which was guaranteed by their suave-talking 'coyote,' to be no problem because the tough-but-doable two-day hike through the southwestern desert was a frequent trek by many "illegales."  Their fate was sealed when the coyote placed the men's lives in the hands of a 19-year old inexperienced boy as their guide and who ultimately got them lost.  Only 12 survived.  The other 14 slowly perished in the hellish 110-degree desert heat.

The Devil's Highway is a tour de force inspired account of a catastrophe journey which resulted in the "largest manhunt and death-event in border history."

The book has been optioned to executive producer Rudy Joffroy, Creative Dreams Inc. Productions (CDI) for a major motion picture scheduled to begin shooting in Yuma, Arizona this September.  Joffroy, whose credits include (Tomorrow Never Dies, Mickey Blue Eyes, The Thin Red Line, and Titanic), makes his directorial debut with Devil’s Highway.

"Rudy and I see the story the same way," Urrea said.  "We see a responsibility to the 14 dead men, the survivors and all border crossing victims.”

The story is not just about the deceit and greed of men who smuggle human cargo but also a "geographic history cultural and economic analysis, poetry and an indictment of immigration policy."  Urrea states he always regarded the Border Patrol as the enemy.  "To go find members of that agency who I think I have become really good friends with and respect was a shock to me."  The story is a brilliant balance of victims, villains and those in-between who are responsible for this U.S./Mexican government’s on-going unresolved dilemma.

"We invite anyone who would like to come meet the author, filmmakers and some of the cast of this important literary achievement," says Bel Hernandez, Publisher of LatinHeat.  "A cultural evening is planned which includes a book reading, stimulating conversation, Mexican delicacies, spirits and music."

Director and Executive Producer Rudy Joffroy, who is based in Yuma, Arizona, founded CDI Productions in 2000, as a production company whose goal is to create, develop and produce Latin-American films of exceptional quality for the International Market.  "Our vision for each of our projects is to leave the audience with a profound and unforgettable experience."

"I am extremely grateful to LatinHeat," he added.  "Meeting Bel [Hernandez] and Elia [Esparza] has been a blessing for me.  This powerful resource has been able to open doors leading directly to Latino Hollywood."

To RSVP for Wednesday, April 21st event, contact Brenda Herrera at 310-464-5290, ext. 815 or via email at Brenda@latinheat.com.  While there is no fee to attend, space is limited and RSVP is required.  Dutton’s Bookstore, 11975 San Vicente Blvd., Los Angeles, CA  90049.

1st Annual Artivist Film Festival: Merging Arts & Activism For Global Consciousness

80 Films  -  7  Days  -  1  Mission at the Egyptian Theater, 6712 Hollywood Blvd.

For seven days and nights in April 2004, filmmakers from around the world will unite at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, CA., to witness and address the unwavering necessity of art and activism in our global community.  These activist artists “Artivists', are bound together in their belief that actions do create change and no voice goes unheard. This year’s films highlight: International Human Rights, Children’s Advocacy, Animal Rights, Environmental preservation, and Spirituality.

The diversity of films being presented at The 1st Annual Artivist Film Festival reflects our mission of creating an artistic, activist arena for global awareness.

We were extremely pleased by the high volume of film submissions for the 1st Annual Artivist Film Festival, an eclectic mixture from established and first time filmmakers. Their response to our festival demonstrates the passion and force of activists around the world, and the power of the visual image. ”Super Size Me', o! ur opening film, addresses the unhealthy practices of fast food giants and the consumerist society that gobbles it up; while “The Corporation',  our closing film, tackles the dehumanizing structure of corporate entities and the risks they pose to individuals.   Not surprisingly, we received a large number of films protesting America’s war in Iraq ranging from serious works like, “We Interrupt this Empire...', to more humorous takes, like the animated “Homeland Ho Down'.
