A Haunting Hunt for
a Lost Lover; Julian Hernandez's "A Thousand
Clouds" (by Howard Feinstein, April
15, 2004)
"I'll call you." We've all heard it, or said
it, with little or no follow-through intended -- no matter
that such a dismissal nibbles away at the recipient's soul. In
Mexican director Julian Hernandez's exquisite, frequently
explicit "A Thousand Clouds of Peace" (opening tomorrow in New
York and L.A. from Strand Releasing), crop-topped teen Gerardo
(Juan Carlos Ortuno) has passed his number to unresponsive
tricks more often than he can bear. Several add insult to
injury by offering him money, which he rejects. In the film's
nocturnal opening scene, one such man is a motorist whom
Gerardo services at the steering wheel in a desolate Mexico
City spot. When Gerardo hooks up with a young man, Bruno
(Juan Carlos Torres), who is actually tender, he goes off the
deep end with his infatuation. Unfortunately, Bruno also
offers the fatal three words, and even misses a follow-up
rendezvous, merely sending a cowardly note explaining that he
doesn't want to hurt him. The rest of the film is, in a black
and white both noirish and Bressonian, Gerardo's "via
Dolorosa," his painful hunt for this phantom
lover.
"Gerardo is obsessed with love," the Mexico
City-based Hernandez explains. "It's an idea of love that
might be absurd and old-fashioned, but still the one that we
must all endure at least once. It's a love, in the German
Romantic tradition, that makes you fall into an abyss and test
your own limits. It can force you to suppress your own ego for
the other person. Gerardo constructs his personality with this
obsession as its foundation." The besotted boy even looks
around the bus station in Bruno's faraway neighborhood of
Ciudad Azteca.

DIRECTOR
DISCLOSES PLANS FOR HELLBOY: THE
DVD
Hellboy
director Guillermo del Toro is planning two
separate DVD versions of his movie, a double-disc edition to
be released in August, and a "fan" edition containing a longer
cut (by 20 minutes) to be released in December. "The first
edition is going to be a double disc hopefully, and the second
edition is going to be a long cut of the movie, 20 minutes
added, and you add a third disc to it," del Toro told Video Store magazine. "I
think you have the chance of the more casual fan just buying
the first one, and the guy who really is hardcore going for
the second one." Among other things, the longer cut will
develop the relationship between Agent Myers (Rupert Evans)
and Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) -- which ignites the jealousy of
Hellboy (Ron Perlman). The subplot, del Toro said, "couldn't
be in the movie because the theatrical cut has to be a cut
that moves to a pace that any casual fan or nonfan can enjoy,
[while] the DVD is [for] hardcore [fans]."

WETB*CK CH*NK is an explosive comedy that charges into the
dangerous territory of race, but without the predictable anger
and angst.
N*W*C says, "The show traces the origins and
evolution of three derogatory terms that shaped our lives and
took the place of a genuine understanding of our distinct
cultures. In doing this show we hope to de-power these words
for ourselves and for our audiences.
Oh yeah, and we

SoloCortos.com
Hola
amgos:
independiente.

Actors and egos are
lampooned in this amusing, witty satire where drama students
fall in love and compete for the few paying roles available.
The film weaves in a love story between Isabel, the drama
teacher and her ex-lover, now a successful film director, who
is looking for fresh faces. Soon everyone in the school is
preparing scenes from Oedipus to Hamlet. In the process,
actors clash, egos inflate and they either behave like spoiled
brats or team players--in short, as real life actors. They are
chided with sympathy as the film is dedicated to the 4500
actors working in Spain. A tale of love and risking everything
in the name of dreams, the film has a bohemian flavor that
breathes magical life into the beautiful sets and glowing
cast.

In this nostalgic comedy,
set in Valparaíso 1950s, Simón, a photojournalist, is obsessed
with creating a film that will redefine cinematic arts in
Chile. Despite many problems, Simón and his friends, an
entertaining myriad of characters including a Francophile
boarding house owner, a Don Juan, and a leading lady Audrey
Hepburn look-alike, embark on a search for artistic identity
and love. Alarcón mixes bright colors and B&W images,
suggesting the real and the imagined worlds. The '50s music
recalls a sunny epoch and creates a sweet mood for this visual
delight.
