NEWS

NALIPsters:

It is with a heavy heart and enormous regret that we must inform you of the passing of lifelong Puerto Rican activist, and 2004 NALIP Lifetime Achievement in Media Advocacy award recipient, RICHIE PEREZ, on Saturday, March 27th.

We have been informed by former NALIP Board Chair, Lillian Jimenez, that Mr. Perez was with his immediate family at the time of his crossing over.  I think we can take solace in the fact that we honored and respected him in life and will remember him as a giant who walked among
us. For a full bio on Richie Perez, please point your browsers to:   www.nalip.org/conference2004/Bios.htm#Richard_Perez

God bless his unselfish soul... there will never be another like him.

PLANNING THE INDEPENDENT PRODUCTION

Many of you have asked me about my course at UCLA in Planning the Independent Production and if it is available to you. At the time I told you it was FTV 247 and that it is only available to students enrolled in the Masters Degree Program in the Producers Program of UCLA School of Theater Film and Television.   Well now I have some good news. We have been able to create an on-line course which parallels that course and you may receive college credit (grad or undergrad) fromUCLA for the course. It is offered through summer sessions in the summer of 2004 and it has the same lectures I do in the Degree Program..it also involves screenings and direct interactivity and communication with you and us during the course...The on-line course has been carefully worked through to give you the same attention one would get if you were in the classroom face to face with me.

If you are interested in taking the class (which I do myself and not staff) then all you have to do is click on the ucla summer session web site:
www.summer.ucla.edu

and go to schedule of classes..then click on registrar and select the term "summer  2004" and scroll down to Film and Television. Click Film and Television on and go to FTV 247 section 3 OFF CAMPUS. That's the one...or here is the direct e mail address:

Open Letter to the National Association of Latino
Independent Producers

Dear Friends,

At the last town hall meeting, during the 5th NALIP National Conference, some of us expressed our concern about the future of the relationship between our organization and the corporate sponsors (Time Warner, HBO, Disney and others). Undoubtedly, sponsorship has
brought many benefits. I know this because I am one of the many who would have been unable to attend without a scholarship.

But I also think the more we seek the support of corporations,  the more we need to maintain a firm stance of not surrendering our independence.  After all, we are the Association of Latino Independent Producers.

I would like to emphasize that I am not criticizing NALIP for attempting to get more Latinas and Latinos into the entertainment industry.  However, as a community, I think we would benefit from asking ourselves a few questions: What should our relation to the industry be? What do we want it to be? What can it be? What are the possibilities, which are the challenges? For example: do we expect our sponsors to provide the financial means while we provide the vision? This seems to me to be a pretty naïve expectation, but I already know my opinion. I would like to hear what my fellow NALIP members have to say.

Which leads me to my second question: What about working outside the industry? What about
alternative ways of producing and showcasing our work? What if the fmedia we are producing does not fit the industry standards? Put in a more direct way: what does it mean to be independent?

NALIP's mission statement guarantees "Commitment to Latino/Latina media and filmmakers, regardless of the form or content of their work." I believe that independence necessarily has to do with the individual having her/his own vision; where the individual, not the needs of a certain market, are the origin of the work (hence the word original, don’t we all want to produce
original works of art?) I think we need to maintainthe space where alternative non-commercial film and media making is explored.

Finally, I’d like to volunteer myself to put together a panel on alternatives to the commercial industry next conference. But I think locally we can, and should, be permanently debating, holding worskhops, lectures, etc. which explore the role of independence rather than touching on it once a year. If we don’t pay attention to our independence, we will lose it. And it is very hard to re-gain lost terrain. We must come together as a community if we really want to frame the future.

Anybody interested in helping out, or if you have any reactions to these thoughts, please email me at marcos@cantinafilms.com
