Annual
NALIP Award Crafted by Digital Artists Working in Various
Media
For
the third year in a row—Vue-Ture Arts–a San Antonio-based
studio with outgoing and Founding NALIP Board Member George
Cisneros at the helm—has crafted the glass trophy award
presented to recipients at the annual NALIP conference. Cut
with lasers from glass acquired in Mexico, says Cisneros, the
awards are further evidence of NALIP’s commitment to the
support of digital media in range of platforms.
The award, given this year at Conference V to
Aida Barrera, Richie Perez and Salma Hayek, is an attractive
glass emblem of achievement and a token of appreciation
bestowed on NALIP honorees at its yearly gathering of
independent producers, emerging filmmakers and industry
veterans.
"They’re
part of the work that I’ve been doing for the last several
years," says Cisneros, an inter-disciplinary artist who uses
computers to bring design concepts to any number of physical
and spatial planes, from two-dimensional images on paper,
three dimensional sculpture and large scale public art
installations to documentary
and promotional videoworks, experimental media productions and
webcast events.
"I
used to try with acid and sandblasters," says Cisneros. This
year, NALIP introduced a brand-new logo, which presented both
a challenge and an opportunity for Vue-Ture Arts. Using a specialized
CAD program, Cisneros was able to take NALIP’s new look from
the computer to a slab of glass several inches thick, creating
a beautiful sculpture in the process.
The
awards, as most NALIP conference participants now know, have
become a special part of the organization's efforts
to recognize the pioneering work of producers and advocates
who have paved the way for a new generation of film, video and
digital artists.
"I hear now, that most trophy
shops now offer the same glass I started shipping in years
ago," Cisneros is pleased to note. "So I’m pretty
excited."
NALIP Workshop in Puerto Rico A Big
Success, Attended by 54 Filmmakers
NALIP'S
Puerto Rico chapter launched this past weekend with a terrific
workshop and networking reception for 56 local
producers. Presented in association with Latino Public
Broadcasting and the International Documentary Association,
the all-day seminar was hosted by local public television
station WIPR. After networking and coffee, WIPR
President Dr. Agrait introduced the day's session and
welcomed NALIP and LPB executives to San Juan.
The
panel, on writing great documentary proposals and funding docs
through the CPB system, included LPB Executive Director Luca
Bentivoglio. He and his programming manager Luis Ortiz
were in Puerto Rico to support and encourage more applications
for LPB's June Open Call. Both left the experience
certain that numerous interesting projects and skilled
producers would access their funds, along with ITVS, CPB's and
other public television initiatives available to diverse
voices in 2004.
NALIP Board Chair Frances
Negron-Muntaner, a Puerto Rico native, contributed her wisdom
both as a filmmaker successfully funded by ITVS' LINCS program
for a documentary on Guam, and as a panel 'insider,'
explaining the evaluation and selection process for
applications and sample tapes once submitted to the public
t.v. system for funding.
FARMINGVILLE filmmaker Carlos
Sandoval joined the workshop to present a case study on the
evolution of his film, the development of his successful
written proposal, the budget and sample tape that garnered
financial support from not only LPB and ITVS, but the Sundance
Documentary Fund and the MacArthur Foundation, as well.
After lunch, FARMINGVILLE was screened for the workshop
producers and sparked a lively and impassioned
discussion.
The day was moderated by NALIP Executive
Director Kathryn Galan. She and Ms. Negron invited local
members, both documentary and narrative, to a networking
reception in Old San Juan after the workshop, and were joined
by WIPR executive Sonya Canetti and Puerto Rico Film
Commissioner Laura Velez, among other guests. We are
certain that NALIP-PR is off to a great success, under the
guidance of workshop organizer and LPA alum Frances Lausell,
and hope to have many new NALIP members as a result of
this first program in Puerto Rico!

"AMERICAN
FAMILY - JOURNEY OF DREAMS" Special cast and crew
screening
Dear Friends,
You and a guest are
invited to attend a special screening of the first two
chapters of the miniseries, "AMERICAN FAMILY - JOURNEY OF
DREAMS." AMERICAN FAMILY, PBS' widely acclaimed drama, returns
to broadcast television Sundays at 7 p.m. beginning April 4,
2004, with the Gonzalez clan celebrating the wedding of one
son while confronting their worst fears as another goes off to
war. Starring Academy Award(r) nominee Edward James
Olmos, Constance Marie, Yancey Arias, Jesse Borrego, Patricia
Velasquez, Kate del Castillo and Raquel Welch, with special
guest stars Esai Morales, Lynn Whitfield and Rachel Ticotin,
and special appearances by Sonia Braga, the second season
juxtaposes the Gonzalez family's story against the broad sweep
of contemporary history. AMERICAN FAMILY - JOURNEY OF
DREAMS interweaves the Gonzalez' courageous escape from the
Mexican Revolution to seek a better life in America with the
sacrifices the family made in the 1990s to send their
first-born son to medical school and the consequences of those
sacrifices as seen through the prism of war in Iraq to reveal
how their past informs their future.

JOURNEY OF DREAMS was created by Gregory Nava and is produced
