Editor’s Note: Once more the numbers are staggering, but I continue to claim that these ARE NOT the most relevant of statistics. I insist that the numbers that are truly relevant are those that show that in the five top US markets, three of them the most influential markets of the world,… WE ALREADY ARE THE MAJORITY. WE ARE THE TRENDSETTERS. WE ARE THE MAINSTREAM! We need to take ownership of this fact! Just my humble opinion…, Alex

ON THE SCENE ®: Cinequest Awards Brazilian "Man" its Maverick Spirit Award; Touts Online Project  (by Brian Brooks, March 18, 2004)

The Cinequest Film Festival closed last weekend, awarding Brazilian film "O Homen Que Copiava" (The Man Who Copied) its Maverick Spirit award, capping a 12-day event in San Jose, Calif., that included 168 films from 22 countries. The top competition prize winner, directed by Jorge Furtado, follows the story of a 20-year-old high-school drop out who finds
himself counterfeiting money as a means to get a girl's attention, only to be drawn further into the criminal underworld.

In other prizes, Cinequest presented its best feature documentary prize to Celesta Davis' "Awful Normal." The film, which had its world premiere at the festival, focuses on the
director and her sister's experience with child molestation in the late-1970s. Growing up, the two were surrounded by a "normal" loving family, but were abused by a social acquaintance of the family that never went challenged by their parents. Twenty-five years later,
Davis confronts the man on-camera about what had happened.

Executive Director Wanted for: VOICES IN HARMONY

Position Description/Background

Founded in 1995, Voices in Harmony’s mission is to help at-risk youth improve self-esteem, enhance communication and leadership skills, improve inter-cultural understanding, and increase academic engagement and achievement using mentoring and the performing arts.

Voices in Harmony fulfills this mission through two current programs:

Voices Theatrical Production, which is a six-month, one-on-one mentoring program that pairs urban teens with professional actors who serve as mentors and creative collaborators. As a group, the teams engage in theater and trust exercises throughout their participation in the program. The group also focuses on a theme such as stereotyping, substance abuse or violence, and each individual pair develops an original short play based on how these issues affect their lives. When the scripts are finished, professional writers and directors offer their expertise, helping each teen and mentor bring his/her shared vision to the stage. As a result of this process, they are able to impact others with their stories and share their vision of what is possible in our community.

Voices of the Classroom, which is a classroom-based program that fosters a transformative experience for students, helping them not only become better students, but better citizens. Key elements of this program include an intensive performing arts-based curriculum - using explorations in drama, oratory, music and poetry to improve student attitudes toward learning, schooling and themselves. This program concludes with a culminating event made up of student presentations and a second culminating event delivered to a larger audience. Both of these programs provide teenagers with a productive means of self-expression that helps them to appreciate the power of their own voice, connects them with the surrounding community and encourages them to make positive life choices. We emphasize the importance of life skills such as time management; honoring personal commitments and learning to rely on others; acknowledging and working on areas of weakness; and practicing mutual respect through eye contact and active, supportive listening. For the past six months, Voices In Harmony’s Board of Directors has been engaged in a strategic planning process to enhance the current program model, expand our outreach to serve more teens and work with additional program partners, institutionalize our infrastructure and improve our organizational sustainability. This planning has necessitated the hiring of an Executive Director.

The Executive Director will bring to the organization a commitment to provide educational and

developmental opportunities for at-risk youth in Los Angeles. He/She must also have a demonstrated commitment to forge, build and maintain communication channels to all segments of the community. He/She will be expected to play an active role in fundraising and donor development in order to support the operations of the organization; develop and manage programs; build consensus for and coordinate efforts to obtain resources to support Voices in Harmony; build and maintain a high degree of enthusiasm and support for the organization and its programs; and, identify and build effective working relationships with all

key partners, stakeholders and segments of the community. Minimum Requirements

All candidates seeking the position of Executive Director must possess the following minimum requirements in order to be considered as a qualified candidate:

A minimum of (5) five years of increasingly responsible nonprofit management experience.

An interest in/familiarity with mentoring, youth, education, theatre and media (film/television).

Proven experience and background in fundraising and development, with heavy emphasis on fiscal planning, donor and sponsorship development, grant writing, and donor relations.

Experience to develop infrastructure, operations and programs for an organization or start-up. Proven ability to develop, manage, supervise, and direct a nonprofit organization.

Effective media and communication skills--both written and verbal—working with a wide variety of audiences.

Proven experience working with community-based organizations.

  Outstanding interpersonal skills.

Knowledge and experience working with a variety of software programs, particularly datadriven software.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.

  Bilingual in English/Spanish a plus.

Compensation

The salary for the Executive Director is $45-50,000. Benefits include flexible work hours, the opportunity to work from home, as well as paid medical insurance, paid sick time, vacation and holidays.
