Nickelodeon Orders 'Dora' Spinoff

Film depicts U.S.-Mexico border guard

By Mark Olsen (re-printed courtesy of The LA Times)

Fueled by passion and politics, writer-director-producer-star John Carlos Frey gives "The Gatekeeper" an urgency and sense of purpose not entirely unlike Tom Laughlin's man-alone landmark "Billy Jack." Frey's film concerns a U.S. Border Patrol guard at the California-Mexico border who, fueled by self-loathing regarding his own Mexican American heritage, becomes involved with a militia-like anti-immigration organization. When a plan for the guard to cross the border as part of a publicity stunt for the group goes awry, he finds himself trapped in a world of drug cartels and forced labor while struggling to survive. He comes to learn firsthand the suffering and difficulties of the immigrant experience and gains a new perspective on himself, his life and his country.

Made for only about $200,000, "The Gatekeeper" was nevertheless able to gain permission to actually shoot right along the real border fence. As further evidence of the film's verisimilitude, a remote barn dressed to look like a crystal-meth lab for the film was nearly raided by police on an off-day of shooting. Though at times a bit overheated, the film has what critic Jonathan Rosenbaum called "an unvarnished clarity" in its steadfast, low-budget idealism and maintains the pure-beating heart of a classic B-picture programmer. In trying to deal with close-to-home contemporary issues, Frey has managed to create a film that is, if not exactly great cinema, strangely alive and affecting, more than the sum of its parts.

Having played the festival circuit since late 2002 (and picking up a shelf-ful of awards along the way), the film is finally getting a small commercial release. Portions of the box-office proceeds will be given to various charities, and on opening weekend there are a number of benefit screenings scheduled.

GateKeeper screens at select LA area Laemmle Theatres on Friday, March 19th from 12.am to 12 a.m. For more information: 323-656-1619.

The Digital Arts Entertainment Lab Proudly presents:
The Mirror Project Self and society through video
March 17th Student Center Auditorium,
7pm
Georgia State University
44 Courtland St. Atlanta 1st Floor Lobby Level
Admission is free!

The Mirror Project debuts in Atlanta.

ATLANTA — The Mirror Project, a 12-year-old social documentary project founded in Boston, is scheduled to premiere with the screening and discussion of three films March 17 at Georgia State University. Colombia-born Roberto Arévalo founded the project in 1992 to explore social documentary and its links to social change. He relocated it recently to the Digital Arts and Entertainment Laboratory at Georgia State. "A major focus of our work is teaching urban youth how to create documentary videos about their everyday experiences," says Arévalo. "Typically, access to the skills, tools, and resources necessary for making documentaries is concentrated in the hands of a few, but I want to create awareness about the lives of people who, though they may live near one another, remain strangers because of ethnic, cultural, age or socio-economic barriers."

Arévalo will present three films representing the philosophy, methodology and development of the Mirror Project at 7 p.m. March 17 in the Speaker’s Auditorium of the Georgia State University Student Center (corner of Courtland and Gilmer streets).

The First Film is "Carlos’ Way" a documentary made by a youth participant in The Mirror Project.  Twelve year old Daniel DeLeon videotaped his twelve-year old friend Carlos at Somerville Housing Development in Somerville Massachusetts. He takes his audience on a journey of humor and pride as he shares his family history and neighborhood.

The second film, "Porvenir", shows the pioneering work of The Mirror Project founder Roberto Arévalo, Filmed in his native Colombia (Spanish with English Subtitles).   "Porvenir", which means "future," is the name of a rural mountain village on the banks of the Magdalena River in Colombia. "The uneven flow of the river reflects the pulse of its 400 inhabitants. Adobe houses, a dirt road, cotton fields and goats make up the daily landscape.  A vibrant community thrives against all odds.

The third documentary will be the premiere of  "La Vision".  In this work, Arévalo turns the camera on those accustomed to being behind it: Fiona Buttigieg, Brittany Lunsford and Hadley Breckenridge, three GSU photography students. "In ‘La Vision,’ the observer becomes the observed," says Arévalo. "My obvious presence in this documentary calls the audience to remember that videos are as much about the maker as they are about their subjects."

2004 Fox Writer’s Initiative

The FOX Entertainment Group (hereinafter “FOX”) continues its campaign to identify and support promising writers from diverse backgrounds. Since 2001 FOX has funded a Writers Initiative to provide training and guidance for those writers who have little experience in television but hope to break into the industry. We provide enrollment in the six-week Writer's Bootcamp program in Los Angeles, and a one-on-one relationship with Fox Diversity executives who try to assist the writer in gaining employment on a television series.

In 2004 Fox will initiate the next chapter of its annual program whereby TV “spec” scripts submitted by Writers Initiative applicants are evaluated by professional readers who understand the FOX standard. The readers comment on elements such as structure, character, dialogue and whether the writer demonstrates a unique voice. The readers’ written evaluations are delivered to Fox Creative Executives, who discuss which writers may be of most interest to our company. The “specs” of those writers are then read by the Fox CE’s and a group of finalists are invited to meet with the Fox Diversity execs who are supervising the process. From those finalists, up to 15 writers are selected to attend a writer’s workshop at Fox expense and to begin an ongoing relationship with our company. While admission to the Fox Writer's Initiative gives you no guarantee of success, it is possible that it may lead you to employment on a Fox show. It all depends on your talent, timing and luck!

This process has proven to be extremely successful. In our second year of Writers Initiative, five of the fifteen finalists selected for the program were hired as staff writers or writer’s assistants on network TV series. We’ve helped other newcomers to the industry to obtain representation from agents or managers.

Continuing to grow upon this success, FOX’s Diversity Development Department will accept submissions for this year’s Writers Initiative beginning January 1, 2004 through April 15, 2004.

FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO APPLY, go to www.fox.com/diversity and click on Writer’s Submissions.  Remember, the deadline for script submissions is April 15, 2004.

Jobs

I would like to announce that I am looking for a qualified individual to cover my class "Latinas and Media" for Spring of 2005 while I am on sabbatical. The person needs a graduate degree (MA, MS, JD,,etc) to teach at the college or university level, but doctorate not mandatory. The pay would be at the adjunct rate through the Institute for Puerto Rican and Latino Studies at the University of Connecticut, Storrs. UConn is that great basketball school located outside of Hartford. We are the flagship university of the state. You can send inquiries to the secretary Anne at the Institute at prladm02@uconnvm.uconn.edu or send questions to myself at diana.rios@uconn.edu. Thanks, Dr. Diana Rios
