UAFW
WASHINGTON DC 2004 RESCHEDULED
REDUCED RATES ANNOUNCED!

Due to limited resources as a result of preparing for the upcoming 2004 Urban Filmmakers Conference (UFC) , we regretfully announce that Miami and Philadelphia have been dropped from the 2004 UAFW Tour.

In addition, the Washington DC workshops have been rescheduled from March 19th to Saturday, May 8th. The Detroit workshop will happen as scheduled on Saturday, April 17th, however both workshops will now take place entirely on Saturday and at a much lower registration rate.

The new rates are $50 per class for regular registration and $65 for late registration. Both courses may still be purchased together at a reduced rate which is now $90 for regular registration and $120 for late. The early or regular registration rates expire two-weeks prior to the workshop start date.

Click here to view our revised tour schedule.

If you have already registered and still plan to attend, please contact us via email at info@uafw.org so we can refund any overpayment. Once again, we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these changes may have caused.

Sincerely,

Team Rockstone

Teenagers Renata and Ulises search for love and freedom amidst class divides, prejudice, peer pressure and urban violence in this moving Romeo and Juliet story set in the shopping malls, working class barrios and wealthy neighborhoods of Mexico City. Skateboards, graffiti art and a gritty rock en español soundtrack propel this bittersweet love story starring Martha Higareda and Luis Fernando Peña (De la Calle) as teenagers who use hopes and dreams to imagine a better world. Also starring Ximena Sariñana (Todo el Poder), Andrea Damián and Armando Hernández. The soundtrack features music by Fey, Elefante, Genitallica, Diabolo and Pulpo. From the director of Todo el Poder. * Asesino en Serio *
Mexico, 2002, 86 min.
A mysterious Aztec ritual, a jaded police chief and a trail of smiling victims play a role in this "cheeky" murder mystery/erotic thriller/ comedy about a killer whose victims die in bed.  Asesino en Serio provides a stylish and hilarious update to the campy Mexican "Sexy Comedias" of the 1980s. Starring Santiago Segura, Jesus Ochoa and '80s comedy regular Rafael Inclan as a wisecracking medical examiner. The soundtrack features music from Julieta Venegas, Maldita Vecindad and Jarabe de Palo. A film about obsession, confession and nalgas. For mature audiences. A literal power struggle erupts in the Colombian shantytown of La Estrella when the first electric street lights are installed. The celebrating quickly turns to conflict when there is a debate about when electricity will be available for homes. Two families take matters into their own hands and begin bootlegging the electricity from the lampposts, which leads the community into an inevitable, yet tragicomic, power war. Starring Jairo Camargo, Alina Lozano, Patricia Maldonado and Gilberto Ramirez. For mature audiences. Screenings: Sunday, March 14, 12:00 pm, Monday, March 15, 7:30 pm, Sunday, March 21, 7:00 pm

* Farmingville *
USA, 2003, 79 min.
The chilling racially-motivated attempted murders of two Mexican day laborers catapults the Long Island town of Farmingville into national headlines, exposing a frontline of the new border wars: suburbia. Blending the stories of town residents and day laborers, this bilingual, cinema verité documentary reveals the human impact of national policies that can lead to fear, isolation, racism and violence. The filmmakers capture first hand the voices of people for whom immigration in the new global economy is not an abstract debate, but a reality of daily life. Winner of the Special Jury Prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival and the Premio Mesquite Long Documentary Award from CineFestival in San Antonio. Screenings: Tuesday, March 16, 10:15 pm, Thursday, March 18, 8:00 pm, Saturday, March 20, 3:30 pm

* Kill Me Tender *
Spain, 2003, 98 min.
The delightful Ingrid Rubio (Todas las Azafatas Van al Cielo) stars as Maribel, a pretty, young woman who goes to Barcelona to work in her sister Angela's S&M club. When the elderly widower Nestor expresses his love for her, Maribel sees this as a quick road to wealthy widowhood...especially if she gives Nestor's heart a run for it's money. When Nestor fails to kick the bucket, however, Maribel enlists the aid of ex-legionnaire Manolo, an insurance salesman with a thing for bunny costumes. A black comedy full of pain, pleasure and wicked plot twists. For mature audiences. Screenings: Friday, March 19, 9:45 pm, Saturday, March 20, 8:00 pm

* Lugares Comunes *
Spain/Argentina, 2003, 112 min
As a professor of literature, Fernando Robles has spent a career teaching others how to teach. His happy family life in Buenos Aires is upended, however, when he learns that he is being forced into retirement. Can a man whose ideals are formed by the great thinkers of the past cope in the modern world of progress? Legendary actor Federico Luppi (Tiempo de Revancha, El Espinazo del Diablo) and Spanish actress Mercedes Sampietro (La Ultima Rosa, La Blanca Paloma) star in this tragicomic story of life, love and literature. From the director of Tiempo de Revanche and Martin (Hache). Screenings: Sunday, March 14, 8:00 pm, Monday, March 15, 9:45 pm, Sunday, March 21, 6:00 pm

Juan is the illegitimate son of Joaquin, an elderly engineer who spent his life obsessively searching for a sunken 18th Century Spanish galleon. When Joaquin dies, he wills his boat to Juan. Joaquin's legal heirs, however, want the boat back. Before they can find him, however, Juan sets off to find the Spanish galleon himself. Starring Eduardo Palomo (Kingpin, Corazon Salvaje, Cronica de un Desayuno, La Mujer de Benjamin) in one of his final roles. Also starring Rebecca Jones, Alejandro Parodi and Guillermo Gil. Written by Garcia Agraz and Carlos Cuaron (co-writer of y tu mama tambien). Nominated for Best Foreign Spanish Film at the 2004 Spanish Goya awards. For mature audiences. * Nicotina *
Mexico/Argentina, 2003, 93 min.
Diego Luna (y tu mama tambien, Frida), Marta Belaustegui and Jesus Ochoa (Asesino en Serio, El Segundo Aire) star in this stylish Tarantinoesque caper film about a computer geek who plans to give the access code to a Swiss bank's computer to a Russian mobster in exchange for diamonds. Screen heartthrob Luna stars as Lolo, a computer geek who thinks diamonds will help him woo the beautiful neighbor he is spying on via webcam. His plan is discovered, however, and suddenly everybody wants in on the action. Computers get hacked, people get whacked and criminals smoke like there's no tomorrow in this bloody and beguiling film. For mature audiences. Screening: Tuesday, March 16,
8:00 pm

* El Nominado *
Chile, 2003, 100 min.
The year is 2006 and media corporations have saturated the TV landscape with so many reality shows that ratings are starting to drop. Their new show "Bajo Tierra," which puts twelve sexy young people in an underground bunker in the Andes is a huge hit until one of the "castmembers" takes the others hostage and begins killing them on TV. Is this a national crisis or ratings to die for? The stellar multinational cast includes Juleta Cardinali, Francisca Merino, Delfina Guzman, Sebastian Layseca and screen hunks Christian de la Fuente (Basic) and Rene Lavan (Azúcar Amarga, One Life to Live). This will be the film's World Premiere! For mature audiences. Screening: Thursday, March 18, 7:30 pm, Saturday, March 20, 9:45 pm

* Radio Favela: Oma Onda No Ar *
Brazil, 2003, 107 min.
Inspired by a true story, Radio Favela is an uplifting and musically-charged story about a pirate radio station in Bello Horizante, Brazil's third largest city. Serving as a voice of the people, Jorge and his friends confront the issues of the day: police brutality, a racist educational system, corrupt politicians, poverty and the lure of crime as a career path for the youth. Needless to say, this draws the attention of local officials who are set on busting Jorge and shutting down the station. Jorge's sassy anti-establishment sound bites and a soundtrack featuring great Brazilian hip hop, soul and funk make this film a winner. For mature audiences. Screenings: Saturday, March 13, 5:00 pm, Saturday, March 20, 5:00 pm, Sunday, March 21, 1:30 pm

* La Virgen de la Lujuria *
Mexico/Spain/Portugal, 2001, 110 min.
Mexican film legend Arturo Ripstein's 24th film is a stylized allegory of politics and power set in 1940s Mexico. Luis Felipe Tovar (De la Calle, Todo el Poder, Men with Guns, The Mexican) stars as Ignacio "Nacho" Jurado, a waiter in the Café Ofelia whose main comfort outside of his demeaning job consists of a strange collection. He falls for an opium-addicted, alcoholic prostitute named Lola (Ariadna Gil, Belle Epoque), who has been cast off by local masked wrestler Gardenia Wilson (Alberto Estrella). Lola returns Nacho's affection with sadistic cruelty and humiliation. Meanwhile, a group of exiled Spanish Republicans in the café plot to kill Francisco Franco. Can Nacho win Lola's heart by killing Franco himself? A sultry noir melodrama written by Ripstein's wife and collaborator Paz Alicia Garciadiego. For mature audiences. Screenings: Saturday, March 13, 9:45 pm, Wednesday, March 17, 4:00 pm, Friday, March 19, 7:00 pm, Sunday, March 21, 10:00 pm
