NALIP
in San Juan:
National
Association of Latino Independent Producers collaborates
with
Puerto
Rican and U.S. organizations to develop proposal-writing
skills
San Juan, Puerto Rico (March 10, 2004) The National
Association of Latino Independent Producers (NALIP), the
largest membership organization of Latino filmmakers in the
United States, will be in San Juan as the co-sponsor of a
grant writing and financing workshop, and will hold meetings
with local institutions to promote cooperation plus assist in
the development of an already constituted NALIP chapter in
Puerto Rico.
A Puerto Rico-native
and experienced producer, NALIP Board Chair Frances
Negron-Muntaner will join the workshop to illuminate the
process from the filmmaker’s perspective and participate in
local discussions. “Puerto Rican producers have a wealth of
stories to tell and there are increasing opportunities in the
United States for Latino filmmakers. NALIP is dedicated to
supporting and developing filmmakers’ skills and relationships
so that their films are made and seen both within this
community and throughout the media field.”
Negron has also
served on the evaluation panel of Independent Television
Service (ITVS), the largest funder in the public television
system. She will
provide insight into how proposals are evaluated, the criteria
for success plus show a sample tape from her successfully
funded project FOR THE RECORD: GUAM AND WORLD WAR II,
which is being produced by ITVS through their LINCS
program.
The workshop is
entitled “Grant Writing and
Financing Resources Workshop,” and will be
co-sponsored with Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB). Planned for Saturday,
March 13 at WIPR from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., the program is
presented in association with Puerto Rico Public Broadcasting
Corporation and the International Documentary Association, and
is designed to help filmmakers develop successful proposals
and devise fundraising strategies so that they can access
funding and distribution in the public television
system.
“We come to San
Juan as part of our continuous outreach effort to inform the
Latino filmmaking community about the public resources and
opportunities available to them,” says LPB Executive Director
Luca
Bentivoglio.
Himself a long-time producer and executive, Bentivoglio
now heads up LPB’s Open Call process that distributes funds
annually for the development, production and post-production
of Latino short and feature length documentaries. “We want to receive
and fund more proposals from Puerto Rico filmmakers, and see
more projects about their experiences.”
The panel will
examine the key elements of writing a funding proposal,
including the project description and budget. It will also look at
how to build a winning team to collaborate on a film, where to
look for matching funds and what distribution opportunities
exist in the public television sector.
The workshop
will also feature Sonya Canetti of WIPR, who will explain
current programming initiatives of the local public television
station. The full
day program will be moderated by NALIP Executive Director and
IDA Executive Board member Kathryn F. Galan, and include
distribution of NALIP’s new Latino Media Resource
Guide, a comprehensive resource of Latino/a filmmakers,
funding resources, diversity initiatives and film schools that
is published by NALIP.
The program will
conclude with a screening of LPB/ITVS funded documentary
FARMINGVILLE by Carlos Sandoval and Catherine Tambini. This public television
production will air in summer 2004 on the series
P.O.V./American Documentary, and examines the controversy in a
small Long Island town when the community sought ways to
respond to the Mexican day laborer population. Questions and answers
about how this film was developed and produced, including its
proposal and sample tape, will be woven into the workshop as a
Case Study by Bentivoglio.

Queen of the Gypsies, A Portrait of Carmen
Amaya La reina de los gitanos, un retrato de Carmen
Amaya USA / Spain 2002, 82min DIR Jocelyn Ajami
Carmen Amaya, legendary, passionate, and fiery
"duende" (soul) of the gypsy, revolutionized the art of
flamenco during the 20s and 30s and became the first gypsy to
become a world famous star. A child prodigy, Amaya was born
into abject poverty in 1913. At the age of four, she started
to dance on the streets of her native Barcelona.
By 23 she had become a stunning star of Spanish cinema and a
darling of Hollywood and Broadway. Amaya embodied sensuality
and expressiveness and to this day remains unequaled in the
art of flamenco. Dancing both male and female roles, a
flamenco Marlene Dietrich, she will be forever identified with
the passion of the Spanish spirit.
This
screening is part of the monthly Latino Film Festival program
at the La Peña Cultural Center.

Queridos Compinches and
Compinchas,
New week, new events. I am making any
possible effort to attend the San Diego Latino Film Festival,
but it seems that this time I will need to skip it, much to my
own regret. But if you can make it, do not miss it, since by
now Ethan Van Thillo, its Exec Director, has put together one
of the prominent Latino film festival attracting celebrities,
high powered execs and, of course, extremely talented
filmmakers.
Talking about events, I had the honor
to be invited by my dear friend Alex Nogales to
the National Hispanic Media Coalition IMPACT AWARDS this past
Friday and what a great party it was! I was very glad to see
that the extraordinary efforts of mi tocayo, Jeff Penichet and
the rest of the board are paying off.
I had the opportunity to, thanks to my
mentor Frank Zuñiga, befriend Alex and Jeff many
years ago when they were starting the organization. Then, in
my typical cynical ways, doubted that this small bunch of very
well intentioned people would be able to make any dent in the
inequities that we were suffering. When they started kicking
the chins of the major studios and networks, it truly looked
like a sling-less David vs. many well-armored Goliath’s
story.
I love to be proven a fool in matters
like this…, they not only got one big sling on their
determination and perseverance, but also many very powerful
stones when they were able to rise the support of our own
community, put together a coalition of all other minority
groups with the same concerns and, funny thing, using a mix of
strong-arm with persuasive strategies turn a couple of those
giants in a our favor, once they demonstrated to them the
advantage to join our cause early rather than later. You know,
money talks…
To them and to this year’s IMPACT
awardees (Maria Elena Salinas, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu,
Johnson & Johnson and The Walt Disney Company) our most
felt congratulations! Siganle en la chin…, we are all in your
debt.
