Belin Rekindles the Spirit of Che Guevara
By Geoffrey Macnab
February 9, 2004-Last month, Che Guevara's old Cuban friend and travelling companion Alberto Granado was denied entry to the US for the Sundance World Premiere of Motorcycle Diaries, Walter Salles' film based on his 1952 journey round South America on the back of a Norton 500 with Guevara.
Thankfully, the 81-year-old did make it to Berlin for Friday's Panorama premiere of Travelling With Che Guevara, Gianni Mini's documentary about the famous journey.
"I'm very glad that this movie has been shown here (in Berlin)," Granado said. "This film shows what I have been saying again and again - that Che Guevara was a real person; a person of flesh and blood." (Full story: subscription required)

The Alternative Screen: A Forum for Independent Film Exhibition & Beyond...
The Alternative Screen was founded in 1995 to bring the best of provocative, innovative and fiercely independent filmmaking to Los Angeles audiences. It offers independent filmmakers a critically acclaimed, year-round venue to showcase their work to public audiences as well as members of the entertainment industry.
The series primarily focuses on feature films (narrative, documentary) without wide commercial distribution, but we have also hosted LA premieres and parties for independent films on the eve of limited distribution; a showcase of uncensored music videos; short & animated film programs and presentations of work in new media.
Our showcase environment spotlights one individual film/filmmaker at a time and provides an opportunity to obtain reviews from prestigious Los Angeles film critics, a platform for public reaction and an opening for dialog with distributors.
In selecting films to participate in The Alternative Screen, we look for those that convey an independent style, spirit, format and vision.
As film artists struggle to obtain even an art house run, we hope to provide a platform for emerging artists to gain exposure and for audiences to experience rare visual treats.

Queen of the Gypsies, A Portrait of Carmen Amaya
La reina de los gitanos, un retrato de Carmen Amaya
USA / Spain 2002, 82min DIR Jocelyn Ajami
Carmen Amaya legendary, passionate, and fiery "duende" (soul) of the gypsy revolutionized the art of flamenco during the 20s and 30s and became the first gypsy to become a world famous star. A child prodigy, Amaya was born into abject poverty in 1913. At the age of four, she started to dance on the streets of her native Barcelona. By 23 she had become a stunning star of Spanish cinema and a darling of Hollywood and Broadway. Amaya embodied sensuality and expressiveness and to this day remains unequaled in the art of flamenco. Dancing both male and female roles-a flamenco Marlene Dietrich, she will be forever identified with the passion of the Spanish spirit.
This screening is part of the monthly Latino Film Festival series at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
