LATINA FILM FESTIVAL MAKES NEWS-NALIPsters INVOLVED!

Three NALIP members this past weekend put together the first ever all women Latina film festival in Los Angeles, called the Boyle Heights Latina Independent Film Extravaganza.  A lot of planning went into this festival, along with tons of inspiration.  The festival was founded by creative director, Josefina Lopez, who was inspired by the idea at the 2004 NALIP Conference in Santa Barbara.  The other two NALIP members, who played a key role in producing the festival were none other than Iris Almaraz and Erick Garcia both from Los Angeles.

The festival included over 30 independent films, which included narratives, documentaries and experimental pieces coming from Los Angeles, New York, Houston and San Francisco, just to name a few.  The women selected for the festival were required to submit films as writer/director.  Winners of the festival received cash prizes, Final Draft screenwriting software, unique artwork and accessories..oh yeah.and a 120GB external firewire hard drive from Melrose MAC, located at Melrose Avenue and Highland.

The festival was a success, all thanks to Courage Productions, Total Axis, Latin Heat Magazine, Spanix, LA Weekly, Vanguard Cinema and NALIP for their support.

You can also find more information about the story in the LA TIMES Sunday Edition, December 12, 2004 or watch LA Tv this coming week.

NALIP MAKES WAVES AT SUNDANCE!!!

Not one, not three or six, or even eight, but fourteen active NALIP members worked in all aspects of production on the truly independent film HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER, Georgina Ridel's new feature accepted into competition at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

From the writer/director to producers and production manager, from the set designer and production attorney to even craft services and production assistants, the 'HOW THE GARCIA GIRLS SPENT THEIR SUMMER' team was mostly Latino filmmakers and mostly NALIP members!  Writer/Director/Producer Georgina Garcia Ridel graduated from AFI, and later partnered with her shorts producer Olga Arana--2004 Latino Media Resource Guide Research Manager (LMRG) and Jose Mangual (LPA Production Coordinator) to cast and prep the project.  The film shot in Yuma, Arizona in fall 2003, just after the close of NALIP's first Latino Producers AcademyT.  Our very own NALIP Signature Programs Director Octavio Marin came aboard as Unit Production Manager, and enlisted many LPA staff and volunteers to help get the film in the can.  Now, the film heads to Sundance where it is being repped by NALIP's Alexis Garcia of Sheppard, Mullin!

'THE GARCIA GIRLS' is set during a long, hot summer in the small border town of Somerton, Arizona.  When Dona Genoveva (Lucy Gallardo), the Garcia family matriarch, purchases a car, she sets off a chain of events that lead to a sexual revolution within her family, from her middle-aged daughter (Elizabeth Pena) to her teenage granddaughter (America Ferrera).

Other cast members include: Steven Bauer, Jane Sevilla, Rick Najera, Alyssa Diaz, Ana Cervantes, David Barrera, Leo Minaya, Jorge Cervera, Ricki Lopez, Victor Wolf and Chuey Perez.

NALIP congratulates all of the members that participated in the film for such an achievement!
