LATINO PUBLIC BROADCASTING ANNOUNCES THE WINNERS OF
THE SIXTH ANNUAL 2004 OPEN CALL
Final Selection Awards Sixteen Projects for Funding

Los Angeles, CA (November 4, 2004) - Latino Public Broadcasting is proud to announce the winners of the Sixth Annual 2004 Open Call, a competitive process where projects addressing Latino themes or issues of particular interest to Latino-Americans are chosen for funding. Sixteen projects have been selected out of one hundred-three applicants from across the United States. LPB Chairman, Edward James Olmos comments, "The extraordinary proposals we received this year are proof that there is a sense of urgency in the Latino community to tell our stories and make our voices heard. It is my pleasure to congratulate this year's winners."

Through proactive outreach, a large number of highly qualified applicants with remarkable and compelling proposals applied for funding, allowing LPB to increase the number of projects awarded from the previous year. "The quality of this year's awarded projects is a direct result of an artistic film community that is dedicated to showcase the most relevant aspects of the Latino culture," says Executive Director Luca Bentivoglio.

Every year LPB hosts an open call process for independent filmmakers to submit proposals for funding at various levels including research and development, production, post-production and outreach. LPB is especially interested in programs that provide thoughtful dialogue and impact-full
stories, giving voice to those not normally heard or seen.

Once proposals are submitted, a group of professionals working in public television and independent film reviews and critiques the proposals. The highest rated proposals are then brought before a panel that makes the final selection for funding. This year's panel was comprised of public television executives, local station managers and directors, academics, and other funding organization members.

Open Call awarded funding to 16 filmmakers and 63% of winners were women. California filmmakers dominated this year's open call with 50% of awarded submissions, followed by Texas (18.75%), New York (12.5%), Florida (6.25%), Massachusetts (6.25%) & Illinois (6.25%). Submissions from other states and territories included: Arizona, New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, Minnesota, Kansas, Utah, Washington, Pennsylvania and Puerto Rico.

Concerns over Local People Meters haven't faded
The legal battle between Univision Communications and Nielsen Media Research over the reliability of Nielsen's Local People Meters may have ended, but some media companies are still worried that LPMs don't accurately measure audiences. At issue is whether LPMs overcount older, suburban viewers at the expense of younger, urban viewers.

THINGS WE LEARNED, OR WERE REASSURED OF,

WHILE FILMING THE DEVIL INSIDE

Part Two

Mis estimados compadritos y comadritas;

As threatened in previous issues of these ramblings, I have today Danny Rodríguez, chatting over Instant Messaging so we can all learn from the experience of filming THE DEVIL INSIDE.

Please excuse the typos and profanity that we may use, but wanted to give it to you all unaltered and as honest as we can do. Hope you all share with us in the learning experience.

So, fasten your seat belts, que vamos en curvas y sin frenos:

DannyRodriguez03:  ok
AlexMend:
so how we do this
DannyRodriguez03:
u tell me
AlexMend:
kind of an interview or just one our simple chats
DannyRodriguez03:
u tell me papi.......what would work better
AlexMend:
remember it is what WE learned from the experience
AlexMend:
so lets start
AlexMend:  danny say high to the readers of LITI

DannyRodriguez03:
high? come on?
AlexMend:
hi
DannyRodriguez03:
what kind of editor r u have you been smoking
AlexMend:
not in front of the kids
AlexMend:
not
AlexMend:
so take two
DannyRodriguez03:
high liti
DannyRodriguez03:
i mean HI
DannyRodriguez03:
should we start over
AlexMend:
nope we are on
AlexMend:
so danny what is the most important thing you learned filming THE DEVIL INSIDE
DannyRodriguez03:
WOW!!!
DannyRodriguez03:
i dont think there is just one thing that I can point out as most important
DannyRodriguez03:
but if anything,  i must say that just not to give up on my dream and vision, no matter what people would say or the circumstances that might come up......KEEP your head UP!
AlexMend:
when was the moment that you thought you will not going to be able to pull it up
DannyRodriguez03:
WOW!! another one of those questions.....well their was many times
AlexMend:
list them
DannyRodriguez03:
like not having a set cast 2 days before we had to travel to Mexico
AlexMend:
who dropped at the last minute?
DannyRodriguez03:  Having one of my main investors drop out 10 days before we had to head to Mexico

AlexMend:  ouch
AlexMend:
how you recovered from that one
DannyRodriguez03:
as for who dropped out, it was Sen Dog from Cypress Hill
DannyRodriguez03:
6 days before principal photography
AlexMend:
and B Real replaced him?
DannyRodriguez03:
next morning after that......Danny Trejo and Robert Parada (one of the producers) were having breakfast
DannyRodriguez03:
and who walks in, B-Real......
DannyRodriguez03:
he greets Trejo......
DannyRodriguez03:
and Trejo tells him ."So you want to be in a movie"
DannyRodriguez03:
and he said yes
DannyRodriguez03:
and the rest is history.....
DannyRodriguez03:
a producers dream come true....
DannyRodriguez03:
and there was no connection from us loosing SenDog to getting the lead rapper of Cypress Hill (BReal).......
DannyRodriguez03:
BReal was the ideal person for  the role but we always thought he was out of our reach
AlexMend:
so here is an example of how important is to have your friends at your side, here is one of your friends saving your skin when you needed it most
DannyRodriguez03:
yeah..and actually having a cast member that believes in the project and that has your back
DannyRodriguez03:
without Danny T there wouldn’t been no B Real
AlexMend:
tell me, the investor who pulled out, how you covered it his position in so short of a time?
DannyRodriguez03:
the respect that he commands is incredible
DannyRodriguez03:
I believed so much in the project
DannyRodriguez03:
and was not going to let anyone stand in my way so I went to my financing company that financed my home about 2 months ago
DannyRodriguez03:
and signed it off to them.....by the way the financing company its owned by a friend of mine
DannyRodriguez03:
so there is a lean against my house
AlexMend:
lien
DannyRodriguez03:
and i signed it off to his company
DannyRodriguez03:
yeah, i was going to spell check
DannyRodriguez03:
so thats were the first monies came from
DannyRodriguez03:
the hardest thing with monies for film is always getting those first monies
DannyRodriguez03:
after that everyone wanted to jump of the bandwagon
DannyRodriguez03:
with monies
DannyRodriguez03:
specially after the dailies started coming in
DannyRodriguez03:
who you
AlexMend:  now, i have told the LITI
readers how more than two years ago, while we were having tequila and shrimps you told me "pinche alex, we must do a film in here". What was it of the location that attracted the most?
DannyRodriguez03:
many things
AlexMend:
like?
DannyRodriguez03:
first of all the sheer size of the resort
DannyRodriguez03:
it was enormous...
DannyRodriguez03:
walking those long hallways.....
DannyRodriguez03:
abandoned cafeteria, kitchens, rooms, cabins,
AlexMend:
did you have an idea of what the story was going to be?
AlexMend:
or that came later?
DannyRodriguez03:
no idea at the time
DannyRodriguez03:
i just thought in my head "The Shining part 2"
DannyRodriguez03:
and started to think of favors and resources i can call upon
DannyRodriguez03:
so i wanted Horror
DannyRodriguez03:
with action
DannyRodriguez03:
mainstream
DannyRodriguez03:
with a latin twist
AlexMend:
I know for a fact that you spent sometime, unsuccessfully, looking for a script that could be adapted to the location, when did you decided to write one from scratch?
DannyRodriguez03:
i knew what kind of genre i wanted
DannyRodriguez03:
who i had access to
DannyRodriguez03:
and to what I had access to
DannyRodriguez03:
so i would tell writers and directors to come up with ideas, synopses and treatments
DannyRodriguez03:
and they would even take trips down to the resort
AlexMend:
for access you mean who will do it in spec?
DannyRodriguez03:
and come back with ideas
DannyRodriguez03:
no.
DannyRodriguez03:
access as far as talent was concerned
DannyRodriguez03:
one of my friends knew Danny Trejo
DannyRodriguez03:
so I wanted to make him the lead
DannyRodriguez03:
but i would tell writers that I wanted to make Danny T the lead, hero, that the audience would cheer for
DannyRodriguez03:
and that’s actually what he liked about the project
AlexMend:
so this is an unusual way to develop a film. First you started with the location, then with your lead and then you built the story around those two elements?
DannyRodriguez03:
i also had access to Joey Medina
DannyRodriguez03:
Elika Crespo
AlexMend:
don't tell me, a friend who knew him
DannyRodriguez03:
na
DannyRodriguez03:
all of this guys i knew direct
AlexMend:
so what happens with the popular belief that story is king?
DannyRodriguez03:
na...
AlexMend:
in your case sounds that the package elements were in place before the story was.
DannyRodriguez03:
i think that what works for me might work for many people
DannyRodriguez03:
and its something that i learned
DannyRodriguez03:
its about creating a project AROUND the resources and favors you might have access to
DannyRodriguez03:
and working as that being the base of your project
AlexMend:
so this teaches me that the puzzle (film) not necessarily gets puts together from the frame (story) first.
AlexMend:
and that to put together the puzzle you don't need to have al the pieces at once
AlexMend:
well, here we go, something valuable learned
AlexMend:
lets not bore our readers and continue this in the near future
AlexMend:
now say nite nites, take your warm milk and go to bed
DannyRodriguez03:
ok......this is NADA
DannyRodriguez03:
there is much more craziness in "The Devil Inside"
DannyRodriguez03:
from water and power going out, to doctors on set, to mexican swat team, to mutinies...
DannyRodriguez03:
all on the next episode
DannyRodriguez03:
haha
AlexMend:
no shameless plugs here, danny. we will continue folks, so do not change the channel, WE will be back...
DannyRodriguez03:
ok Alex
AlexMend:
gracias mijo, besos
DannyRodriguez03:
take care.......
AlexMend:
and cut...
DannyRodriguez03:
and please dont let me get started on Alex
AlexMend:  AND CUT!
