THINGS I LEARNED, OR WAS REASSURED OF, WHILE FILMING THE DEVIL INSIDE
Part One

Estimados Compinches,

Well, for those that didn’t read the previous issue of Latinos In The Industry (LITI) allow me to give them a short catch-up: I have just returned from a month filming an independent film, THE DEVIL INSIDE, in Ensenada, Baja, Mexico, produced by Danny Rodriguez, Written by Robert Shaw and Joaquin Perea, Directed by Perea, Starring Danny Trejo, Sara Downing, B Real, Elika Crespo, Carla Sanchez, Joey Medina, Dyana Ortelli and Carlos Victorica. It also has performances by Alex Quinn and Richmond Arquette.

I have threatened all of you with a series of articles on what I believe a unique and valuable learning experience: that of being able to see a film go from the very first idea all the way to final distribution.

My friend and hermano (and later you will see why I consider this important), Danny Rodriguez, after having a tour of a 300 room Baja resort closed to the public, since it is being sold (that I happen to have unencumbered access to it), told me “Pinche Alex, WE MUST MAKE A FILM IN HERE.” That was more than two years ago, and so the story beginnings…

During principal photography, I had great fun under what, by nature, will always be hard and stressful work. I helped the production, at one time or another, as Associate Producer, Location Manager, Chef, Catering and Craft Coordinator (failing miserable on these two, more on that later), Safety Coordinator and Tit Wrangler (yeah, no typo there, and more on that also later.)

So here are the things that I learned, or was re-assured of (and you will never know which is which) while filming THE DEVIL INSIDE:

1. IF YOU HAVE THE PASSION, DETERMINATION AND RESILIENCE TO REJECTION, you have a good chance to succeed, not guaranteed, but your chances will be that much greater. You need to love - un verdadero mucho - what you do. If not, choose another path, since the pain and frustration are not worth it, if at the end of it all you didn’t have fun. Keep your focus and efforts going, even if they are in auto pilot, don’t loose your target and have on you a good dose of me-vale-madre-if-you-don’t-like-it at the ready for all those people that do not understand your vision. Remember that is easier to say NO than to say yes, especially when money is involved.

2. IT IS NOT WHAT YOU KNOW…, (and against popular belief) is not who you know, damn, is not even who knows you (as I used to believe), is…, WHO LIKES YOU!

When you are an independent filmmaker, more than the knowledge, talent or even the financing you may have, what will be making or breaking your effort, is your availability of friends. True friends, those willing to go the extra mile for you, to use their own time, knowledge, talent and networks on your benefit and those willing to cover your back. Danny is very lucky of having built a great network of friends that went to bat for him. Without trying to exclude anyone, I can name a few that I know for a fact that he has enjoyed as friends for long: Robert, Chris, the Carlos, and many others too many to count and certainly many more of which I am not aware. One, very important added benefit to having your best friends around, is that when new people come to the effort, they will be impregnated by the respect, admiration and love that you enjoy from your friends.

A mentor of mine once told me, “When you are playing God, creating the illusion of reality, you better have many of your good friends helping you. You don’t have enough money to pay the Big Man to come and do it for you, it is good to have him on your side, but you will need all the help you can get from your closest friends.” Meet them, hook up with them, find common ground, but most important of all, nurture them, give more to them that they give to you.

These are BIG arguments in favor of my insistence to all of you to attend the events where you will be building that network of relationships that in the future will allow you to put in play your knowledge and talent. LALIFF, NALIP’s Conference (shameless plug here), NOSOTROS workshops, Special Screenings and Premieres, Parties, even online chat rooms and IM, can help you do all that. Be out there, not to be seen, but to meet people that are more knowledgeable, experienced and talented that you are (Not to mention the opportunities to have a good taco-de-ojo.) Every minute you spent developing these relationships will pay great dividends in the future, but you need to be patient. They take time in paying back, but they certainly will.

3. BE READY WHEN THE RABBITT JUMPS OUT! Have your shotgun at the ready when opportunities come. Yes, Diosito keeps throwing opportunities at us, but most of them we don’t consider them as being so, since we are not ready for them, or dismiss them as being unreachable, or worst, we jump at them hoping that somehow we will pull them out and end up just looking like fools. Do your homework; study your chosen craft, gain experience and pay your dues, but not forget… is not what you know (see above point).

4. YOU WANT TO MAKE GOD LAUGH?... TELL HIM ABOUT YOUR PRE-PRODUCTION PLANS. Again, against popular belief, it doesn’t matter how much pre-production planning you do, no matter how smart this one is… SHIT HAPPENS! In a production more than anywhere else. Now, having said this, if you are not careful and conscious in your pre-production planning, not only shit will happen, but you will not make it to see the first dailies. A good, time consuming and well thought out pre-production will allow you to be able to deal with the many unforeseen circumstances that you will face, including those created by your own pendejes, while you were doing those so well thought out plans. Remember that the Ooops! factor is unavoidable, but it is your job to be ready to deal with it, and like hangovers, the less the merrier.

Now, not to aburrirlos mas, allow me to continue these ramblings in future issues. And I have great news for you. Danny Rodriguez (I guess to cover his colita on what I may say here) has agreed to join me on these articles, so starting with the next issue it will be… Things WE learned (or were re-assured of) while WE were filming THE DEVIL INSIDE. This will give us a unique insight on the pains and tribulations of producing a film, while we also share in the joy of actually making one. So, no le cambien al canal, ahornita guelvo…
