Based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, this beautiful and poignant romance provides a look into the hearts and minds of two warring communities-the Taos Pueblo and their Spanish conquerors-in 17th-century Santa Fe. All readings will take place in the Autry National Center's Wells Fargo Theater. Native Voices at the Autry presents A Continent of Stories, a series of free play readings. This year's plays are written, directed, and acted by a cast of Native American artists from around the country, telling their stories and presenting themselves the way they'd like to see themselves portrayed. The three playwrights participated in the June 2004 Native Voices at the Autry Playwrights Retreat held at Occidental College and sponsored by the Autry National Center to further develop their plays. There, they were teamed up with professional playwrights, actors, and dramaturges to workshop the plays that are now being presented. The results include a powerful mix of drama and comedy, joy and tragedy, myth and history.

Sponsored by Andrew Kluger de Gerber Co-presented with the Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco Arcelia Ramirez, co- recipient of the Mocte de Oro 2004, is electrifying in this opening heartbreaking monologue as the betrayed wife Julia; a young woman uprooted from her country life and brought to Mexico city. It's a latter- day version, in the filmmaker's words, of the "cruel and terrible" classical tragedy of Medea, Julia lives with her husband, two children and all the trappings of a bored urban existence. She ekes out a living as a healer and herbalist. When her husband leaves her for another woman, Julia's world and everything she has worked for falls apart, and she is left homeless. But her desolation gives way to a desire for revenge and her children will be the agents of that revenge. Recalling the Greek concept of fate and inevitability of destiny, the film moves inexorably to its finish while a disheveled, decadent band of musicians on t.v. comments on the action as the all- knowing Greek chorus.
