'LA LLORONA' COMES TO HOLLYWOOD

Mexican Ghost Tale 'La Llorona' to Haunt Ricardo Montalban Theatre

for Día de los Muertos 10/30/04

(Tale of the Wailing Woman to Play One Night Only in Hollywood)

SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO (Oct. 8, 2004) -- The centuries-old Hispanic ghost tale of the wailing women, La Cuento de la Llorona, will haunt audiences this Halloween and Día de los Muertos for a one-night only performance at the Ricardo Montalban Theatre in Hollywood on Saturday evening, October 30.

Tickets for this hauntingly exciting traveling production may be purchased online at www.tix.com.  The performance begins at 8 p.m. at the Montalban Theatre, 1615 N. Vine Street in Hollywood.

The story is brought to life by the non-profit arts organization Matraka, Inc. (the noisemaker) based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which has toured the production extensively throughout the state as well as part of a Smithsonian festival in Washington, D.C.

The story of La Llorona comes from Hispanic folklore and variations of the spooky tale have been told and retold for centuries.  One of the most widely known versions of the story comes from eighteenth century Santa Fe, New Mexico, where La Llorona is not a disembodied ghost, but rather a supernatural being that never dies.  The Wailing Woman, La Llorona is claimed to be a tormented spirit who appears in the darkness of night, wandering, shrieking, searching.  She yearns for those who dare to go out alone at night.  She needs them.  She wants them.

The story is told in the form of a spectacular stage play with music, song, dialogue, and dance that captures the very essence of Spanish Colonial traditions, heritage, culture and history in the Southwest.  The play is
presented in English with songs in Spanish.

Rosa Maria Calles, artistic director for Matraka Inc., wrote and produced the thrilling play, which features a cast of talented New Mexican actors. The play has attracted rave reviews from critics throughout New Mexico, and is supported by the state's governor, Bill Richardson, as well as noted actor Edward James Olmos.

YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO-- TINA MODOTTI: DREAM OF REVOLUTION

(A one-time event!)

"TINA MODOTTI: DREAM OF REVOLUTION"

Taking place on Sunday, November 7th at Highways

At the 18th Street Art Center- 1651 18th Street, Santa Monica

(For Directions visit www.highwaysperformance.org)

Exiled from her adopted Mexico in 1930, the famous Italian Photographer, sex symbol and political activist battles the powers of racist Europe in her dramatic search for a new home.

In January of 1930, the government of Mexico expelled Tina Modotti from her adopted home, beginning a twelve-year odyssey of exile. Seen through the eyes of her old friend, Pablo Neruda, from many years later, the drama follows Tina's journey across Europe, through the turbulent decade of the 1930's. Along the way she becomes a photographer in Berlin, a translator in Moscow, an operative for Soviet Red Aid in France, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Poland, a battle nurse in Spain during the Spanish Civil War and finally, one of many refugees returning by sea voyage to long abandoned homes and dimly remembered lives.

Using characterization, slides, sound effects, music and voice-over, "Un Sueño de Revolución" combines the talents of a company of artists to tell the story of Tina's exile in two plots. The first follows Tina's struggle to survive after her deportation. The second, told in a series of flashbacks to Tina's youth and young adulthood, explores the question of why Tina made such great sacrifices for what history would eventually judge to be lost causes.
